From a non-American - what is standard vacation time in the US and what days do you have to work over Xmas (what isn't a public holiday?)

For example - this is my first year at my current job (in Scotland) and I get 28 days holiday (I do have to work on some bank holidays so get days in lieu to make up for it, but its 24 days holiday minimum).

Over Christmas/New Years I get Christmas Day and Boxing Day off, then work the next few days and get New Years Eve, New Years Day and the next two days off.

From what I understand, you poor Yanks get totally shafted in the holidays department.

3. We get Christmas Eve and Christmas off.
But, since both fall on the weekend, we get the Friday and Monday off.

If I had not taken all of my time earlier, I could be getting off a week, in addition to those days.

We get 10 days off, total, for various holidays throughout the year.

Of course, you guys in Europe get a lot more vacation time, period.

4. slaves are not allowed holidays! In the restaurant biz, you are
lucky to get Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day...and if your business is open, you get to work those days and get another day off. Day after Christmas off!!! Ha!!!!! Day after Thanksgiving off??? Ha! Money, money, money....corporate family values.
However, I am taking the week after Christmas as vacation this time...I get ONE WEEK a year off. I'm taking off because hubby is a teacher and I've GOT to get OUT of there, now!

6. I have been at my job 8 years....
and get 15 vacation days a year, 8 personal/sick days, plus holidays like Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

Generally, we Yanks get the shaft.

9. Unbelievable
My girlfriend is French and she thinks that having to work 40 hour weeks in Scotland is verging on slavery.

Funy how the French manage to work 35-hour-weeks, take lengthy holidays and still maintain and economy that provides everything the US's does and enjoy a (for mine) superior lifestyle as well.

10. 8 years
If I stayed at my job 10 years, I'd get six months off on full pay as a loyalty reward.

2. Ha ha ha.
I can take any extra holiday time (though unpaid).

In Britain Monday 27 and Tuesday 28th are public holidays anyway (in lieu of Christmas Day and Boxing Day), I'll be off for the rest of the week; then Monday 3rd is a public holiday in lieu of New Years Day. I'm working a half-day at most on Christmas eve (office closes at 1), so I'm off for 10 1/2 days in a stretch.

7. I've use all my time up, too...
We do get off the 23rd and 24th (since Christmas is on a weekend) as well as the 30th and 31st for New Years (since New Years is on a weekend). SO, at least that is something.

*sigh*

Every year I say I'm going to save time to take off in between, but between kids getting sick, normal events, etc. I always wind up having no days left to take.

Yes, my family.

Of course, my mother considers my girlfriend to be a "briar," so we'll see how their first meeting goes. ;)

13. I'm taking off from 12/17 - 12/28...Woo Hoo!
I've been at my job for 3 1/2 years now. We get 15 Vacation, 3 personal, and 10 sick days every year. Plus the usual holidays like New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Laborday, Thanksgiving & the day after, Chistmas Eve and Chriatmas Day.

Pays to work in a hospital where they are trying to attract nurses to work there. :)

14. I'm taking two weeks
I work for the state (TX) and we get 13-14 holidays per year (including such weird things as LBJ's birthday and Texas Independence Day). Normally I would get Christmas day and the day after as holidays but since it falls on the weekend I don't this year. Often the Executive director will give us executive leave on the day before a holiday so everyone gets a half-day off then. I get 10 hours of vacation every month (120 hours a year- 15 days) but because I earn a lot of comp time instead of overtime I don't have to use too much vacation so it accumulates. Up to a certain number of hours (which varies depending on how long you have worked), you can store vacation time. I can keep something like 250 hours, so I just use enough that it stays below that. If you go over, it just becomes sick leave. Considering how little we get paid the leave system is pretty generous.
