I propose a DU group for fans of Animation - any one with me?
I'm talking about the entire spectrum of animation: Classic, modern, stop-motion, cell, digital, foreign, domestic, big-budget, art-school, shorts, features, expirimental, anime - you name it.

We could discuss new releases, post updates about ongoing projects.

Who's interested?

7. Here's the rules, per Skinner
1. Start one discussion thread in the forum of your choice to tell people about your idea for a DU Group.

2. In that thread, you must get responses from at least ten DU members who agree to be active participants in the suggested DU Group. All ten members to respond must have donor stars.

3. In that thread, members must agree on a proposed mission statement for the DU Group.

4. When enough members have signed on to join the group and have agreed on a proposed mission statement, one member must officially suggest the DU Group to a DU Administrator (Skinner, EarlG, or Elad), either by contacting them directly, or by posting in the Ask the Administrators Forum. Please be sure to include a link to the thread where members have discussed the proposed Group.

5. The Administrators will consider the request and make a decision. The Administrators will either 1) Accept the Group as it is proposed, 2) Deny the Group outright, or 3) Ask for changes to the Group or its mission statement which would be necessary for its approval.

6. Once the suggested Group has been accepted by the Administrators, the Administrators will create a new DU Group in the "DU Groups" Category forum, and pin the mission statement of that Group to the top of that Group's forum.

3. Me too!
On the subject of animation, I finally rented Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" a few weeks ago. It was absolutely amazing. Probably like a Japanese acid trip, though I wouldn't know.

We had a discussion a week or so ago about animation and you recommended Grave of the Fireflies. We've got that one at home and will watch it this weekend.

21. If you liked "Spirited Away"
Get hold of "Kiki's Delivery Service", if you haven't already seen it. It's another Miyazaki film (the guy can do no wrong), and although the animation is not quite as lush as Spirited Away, the story makes up for it. Real feel-good stuff.

17. Mission Statement...
According to the guidelines for starting a group, we need to have a mission statement. Here's a start. We can modify it to everyone's satisfaction.

Our mission statement:

To appreciate and promote the art of animation through discussion. All forms of animation can and will be discussed, from Disney classics to Japanese anime. Discussion will relate to all aspects of animation, including artwork, directors, dvd releases and features, etc.

How's that for a start?

23. Mission statement revised
To appreciate and promote the art of animation through discussion. All genres of animation can and will be discussed, from Disney classics, to Japanese anime. Any and all forms of animation, whether it be a full length feature film, a short film or a thirty second commercial are open for discussion. Discussion will relate to all aspects of animation, including stop-motion, digital, cell and experimental artwork, directors, etc.

Members of the group can provide each other with resources for adding hard-to-find animation to their home collections. Reviews and recommendations for DVDs and movie releases are welcome. Members are also encouraged to promote amateur and student animation through links to work and through recommendations.

How's this now?

Rather, "here's where you can purchase a DVD of UPA shorts" or something like that.

I've got Grave of the Fireflies at home right now. We'll probably watch it tonight. Chavez, you may remember a thread about a week ago about the best animated movies, and you recommended it.

My first experience with Japanese animation was Spirited Away. Awesome movie. Beautiful artwork, beautiful story.

Another great one is fairly recent. The Triplets of Belleville was a wonderful work of art. I especially loved the dog. He was as real as animated dogs get.

57. Now don't do THAT please!!!
I'd be interested in this forum, too, but not in anime. Not insulting anyone's taste here, but its a sore point for families like ours who depend on American and preferrably Union employment. My husband's been in The Animation Guild (formerly the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonist's Union) in Burbank for 18 years, and we've seen tremendous amounts of formerly U.S.animation work over the years go first to Japan, then Korea, now to India, Canada, Spain and anyplace else the studios think they can do it cheaper. So please honor fans of all types of animation. He's trying to get trained in the most popular computer programs before they send all of that work out of the country.
