Poll question: Merv, Mike or Dinah
For those who remember who was your favorite 70's daytime talk show host? (and former band singer)? You know, the days when guests used to come on and stay for the entire hour and just move down a chair when the next guest came out.

1. Why isn't Phil Donahue on this list?
Sure he wasn't a singer, but he was the first of the current topic oriented daytime hosts

4. I guess I'm limiting it to
the "entertainment" type of talk show hosts that I mostly remember as a kid. Phil is who led to people like Oprah with usually one guest or topic. Nothing against Phil--I love him.

2. Mike Douglas because of some surreal moments:
John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-hosting one week(!!)

And Martha Mitchell, also co-hosting...talking about how the Nixon administration was out to get her.

Some weird stuff on his show.

5. Mike was definitely the "fringiest" ...
at least during the day. I liked Dick Cavett, too, but he was on at night.

6. I agree
I liked it that Mike D. had co-hosts for a whole week and you really got to know a lot about that person becuz often the guests would sometimes be people who knew the co-host or had some association with them. Gosh, I remember that Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Jerry Lewis, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly (together) co-hosted a full week of shows. Those were fun.

3. Merv had a great band, with Herb Ellis on guitar, for God's sake! But none
of the bands on those shows ever got to play much; it was all about the asshat guests, and you heard maybe 10 or 12 seconds of the greatest musicians in the world.

9. Yeah, Merv turned out to be a repuke
though in his autobiography he talks of supporting Robert Kennedy in '68. My guess is that he "turned" to the GOP. He is also a big pal of Nancy Reagans's.
