4. Googling turns up suggestions it's your sound card drivers
Try reinstalling them -- or redownloading -- or downloading more recent versions. That seems to have helped a lot of people.

9. Open up the case and look?
Or get to the Device Manager (start/settings/control panel/system) and find your soundcard there.

31. Actually, that only tells the installed driver
If the driver installed is not correct for the card, that info is meaningless.

the most foolproof way to check it, without digging around in your registry, is just to look at the card.

33. Not at all :-)
Your Sound card can be found by tracking your speaker wire to the port on the back of your box. With your box open, you'll see that the port is connected to a sound card, which is plugged into your main board.

Qs - Do you have any other sound, like the windows startup sound?
What OS are you using?

If you have XP, your plug and play capabilities are very good, and you can uninstall/reinstall your sound card without much effort.

If you have 95, you have no PnP. 98 and ME are better, but can be tricky if you have an off brand card.

Before you uninstall, make sure you have your Windows install cd handy. Your sound card drivers can probably be found online, free of charge, just search Google.

37. Ok, you have a Dell
which means you don't have the actual Win XP cd, just the Dell recovery disk.

Proprietary POS...

Well, Dell is the best of that lot, at least, :-)

If you do not want to go through a complete reinstall just to get your sound drivers, go to the Dell site:

https://support.dell.com/register.aspx

You can enter your model/series and walk through steps that will tell you what components came with your PC, and then allow you to download the updated drivers from there.

Elsewhile, wait for the recovery disk, and reinstall everything.

Please, though, back up any files you want to save before you run recovery. Some Dell disks will allow you to just reinstall drivers, others will wipe your hard drive and reimage everything so it will be just like it was the day you purchased the system.

Good luck

7. More info needed, please.
Operating system, software used, hardware used, etc.

Do you have the lastest Soundcard drivers installed?
Codecs?

Can you hear any sound at all or just not MP3s?
Can you hear through the headphone jack?

Can you play Wav files?
If you double-click on an MP3 what happens?

Answers, man, I need *answers*!
:D

This seems to be a common problem for MusicMatch.
Try reinstalling the Soundcard drivers.

23. Ok, now we're getting somewhere.
//I got Windows XP//
Good.
Best Windows OS you can own.

//I have no idea about the soundcard and codecs//
Did you look under Device Manager?
The soundcard is listed under "sound, video and game controllers"(usually near the bottom).
For instance, mine says "Creative SB Live!".

//I cant hear any sound at all//
Ok.
I noticed that you said you reinstalled the OS.
Why?

//do the sounddrivers come on a disk like the other drivers?//
Typically, yes.
What brand is the computer?
If nothing else, run Windows Update and to reinstall the missing updates.
It might also tell you which Soundcard drivers you need.

If, in the unlikely event that no sound card shows up under the Device Manager, make certain that you either have a sound card installed *OR* that you have built-in sound on your motherboard.
You'll need to dig up the paper work for the computer.

Did you do anything else to the computer besides reinstall the OS?

44. Whatever you do...
Do not, I repeat DO NOT, download 'Winamp 3'.

Bloated pile of programming garbage. Ugh! Nullsoft is getting ready to disown it.

Seek out 'Winamp 2' on the site. Much, much better. The best for strictly mp3 files!

I avoid MusicMatch like the plague. Wish I could say the same about Real, Windows Media Player and QuickTime. Bunch of malicious crap that screws up my settings.

18. Try going to the Windows Update site...
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 04:56 PM by Spider Jerusalem
windowsupdate.microsoft.com

See if they have any updated drivers for your sound card. If that doesn't work, go into Control Panel, then double-click on "System", then click the "Hardware" tab, then click on "Device Manager"...you SHOULD be able to see your sound card there. Once you have the name and manufacturer of the card, a Google search should turn up drivers.

EDIT: Also...go into Control Panel, then double-click on "Add Hardware". The system SHOULD detect the sound card, even if the drivers aren't installed. Just do a search for drivers for whatever sound card it tells you you have.

24. The Windows XP disk.
Unless you are using a Dell/Gateway/brand name computer with a piece of crap "rescue disk".
In which case, you'll probably need to go to their website to download the drivers.
Actually, if it is a brand name computer, you should do this anyway.

For your videocard and soundcard at the very least.

if you do that, xp will notice that it isn't installed and will attempt to reinstall the drivers or it will allow you to go online and grab something that will work.

43. WHOAA.....slow down a bit

Before we start uninstalling and reinstalling everything, lets try to isolate the problem.

First we've determined that it's not a specific mp3. None of your mp3's work with MMJB (musicmatch jukebox).

Next, let's see if MMJB is the problem. Look for other programs that play mp3's, like windows media player and real player. You can test this one of two ways. Locating the said program, then opening the mp3 that way. Or you can right click your mp3, scroll to "open with" then pick anything you can other that MMJB. If the music starts playing, your problem is MMJB, reinstall it. If you get an error, then you have a driver problem, operating system problem, or your card has failed.

Try this first then in my next post we will reinstall the driver.
