5. neither.
As a person, I find him rather smarmy and nasty.

As a musician, I have fond memories of quite a few of his songs from the "Purple Rain" era.

6. I got bored with him after Around the World In A Day
I still love the old stuff, though. To bad I can't play a lot of it when the kids are around (I'm not saying this just to be nasty, but I sincerely...)

10. the whole symbol thing is misunderstood
from what i've heard, he did that to get around some contractual obligation that he had problems with. i'm not exactly sure of the circumstances though.

i think he's tremendously talented, but i'm not a huge fan of his music. It's important to be able to recognize artistic merit even if you don't like the art itself. i hate rush, but agree they are a talented group.

33. he got "owned" by Warner Bros
and decided to change his "satge name" for that reason. It finally got so bad, he wrote "slave" on his face whenever he did anything.

You might like his real recent stuff, noiretblu. He just released a 4 song set (each over 15 minutes) that's a mix of rock, funk, and jazz. It's called NEWS (North, East, West, South)

9. My grandma thinks he's the sexiest man alive.
She has thought so since the early eighties. She used to have this big Purple Rain cardboard standee of Prince by his motorcycle. She's a paranoid schizoprenic (sp?), so she is a tad eccentric.

11. Leave him.
A once vital artist who jumped the shark and became a self-parody.

See also: Stewart, Rod.

18. Love him up till about '91....
He lost me around the era of "Diamonds and Pearls". Tried too much to fit into that new jack groove thing that I just never got into.

I much prefered his rocking, funked out 80's material.

25. Never liked him
I never really liked his voice when he sang either. But undeniably, the songs themselves that he's done over the years are very good. Usually, whenever another band remakes one of his songs its better than the original imho.

28. Gifted -- is early stuff is terrific -- you cannot *not* tap your toes...
He really knew music, played multiple instruments, and could write a song with an infectious hook.

Too bad he couldn't maintain it.

38. When it comes to pop music....
.... I like to think there isn't much I "don't get", but for the life of me I've never understood the "genius" moniker for Prince.

Not bad, but Genius? Not in any universe I'm familiar with. He is a decent songwriter, but musically banal. To me , he's a genius if you compare him to mainstream pop crap. When compared to other musical geniuses, he comes up 'short' haha :)

Also, I don't mind big egos too much but I prefer they be accompanied with commensurate talent. :)
