Can we all extol the virtues of rice for a moment...
All the recent food threads are making me hungry...

Can we have a thread about rice...

Rice wine, sushi, rice crispy squares...what ever you want...

and of course...

(just trying to reach 600 you know...If I'm being obnoxious, just ignore me and I'll probably disappear...)

4. aka "Cajun Spuds"
My Cajun mother-in-law had a bowl of rice on the table at every meal but breakfast. Even then she'd sometimes serve leftover rice fried in a little sausage or bacon grease.
yum!

21. Buy Jasmine rice at your Asian Market
You won't find it cheaper anywhere. One 25 pound bag lasts me a year. Oh, and never boil rice.. Get a rice steamer, it cooks rice like it's supposed to be cooked.

28. You should try the simple Thai desert
sticky rice with mango! The rice is steamed then mixed with coconut cream and sugar, and sometimes sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. Then it is served with fresh mango. Absolutely delicious!
I have it several times a day when we visit Thailand during mango season.

15. Yea but . . .
Rice isn't very good for you unless it is in its whole form, with the germ and bran still on it, as the basmati rice referred to above.

That doesn't mean I don't eat it, though. :)

I'm not really a health nut, but I do try to balance my diet and watch what I eat.

Being single I've been sustaining myself on a diet of mostly sandwiches, always looking for some healthier alternatives.

24. Not a health food nut anymore either
I eat good old white Minute Rice two or three times a week. When I'm doing Mexican, I put a bullion cube, a pat of butter, cumin, paprika, chili powder, and a handful of mixed frozen vegetables in my rice water before I boil it. The rice cooks up just fine and it is very tasty!

23. Big Basmati fan here too
I buy mine in big bags at a small Indian market near my home. I just love it.

I freeze my leftover rice in baggies and when I make soup, I throw the frozen rice in for the last 10 minutes or so and it makes a perfect additive because it is already cooked and does not soak up twice its weight in water and make the soup too thick

Another trick is to spread your leftover rice on a cookie sheet and dry it in the oven at 200 degrees or so, and then drop it into hot soup, preferably a thin brothy variety...you get sizzling rice soup, which is tasty and jolly fun for the noises it makes

Rice and gravy, rice and chinese stir fry, rice and beans, rice and curry (had curry last night for supper, yum) fried rice, rice with ratatouille, etc etc etc

25. Risotto rocks!
Yes, it means 20-30 minutes over the stove stirring rather than just walking away...but what a result!

Saute a little onion, maybe garlic, add the rice, stir it up a few minutes. Splash a little white wine and stir till that gets absorbed, then start adding the stock a little at a time, keep stirring throughout.

Add whatever you have around the house, or whatever the mood caused you to buy. My favorites usually involve chicken and mushrooms, or shrimp and peas...yum! Finish with a bit of butter and/or a shower of grated parmesan. Omigod it's heaven on a plate.

but rice will do
and suffice...

(Unless it's Condleeza Rice...I have no tolerace for that type of rice:puke: ))

41. why must brown rice be "wild" and white rice is not?
damn the white man and his subliminal messages!

I'm South Indian (India not Native American) so my four food groups are rice, alcohol, fish, and rice. If I couldn't have rice, I'd probably starve to death. mmm...I think I'll go make some right now, with prawns and okra too.

and yes, long grain wild rice decimates all, and it's good for you too.
