I just saw the world's ugliest car. |
|
Ugly in many ways.
I was talking to a friend who works at a local hotel, out in front. I'm on my bicycle, and this black Hummer (not H2) limousine pulls up.
I'm gawking at this HUGE vehicle, while 3 or 4 business-types get out and go into the hotel.
I asked the driver what sort of gas mileage it gets, he said about 5-7 mpg. On the highway. I then asked him how it handled. He said like it handles like a supertanker.
I then asked him why he was even driving the monstrosity. He said he gets paid $20 an hour. (Plus tips.)
He let me look inside, two words came to mind: "Conspicuous consumption." It was luxury and a half. Even had a TV, DVD player and bar!
It was simply obscene. And here I am on my red bicycle...

1. And I thought you were refering to my 1990 Mercury Topaz! |
|
My mom recently congratulated me on driving an old junk car and "turning my back on the rampent materialism so prevalent in our society".
I told her it wasn't a political statement. The Kerry / Edward sticker I refuse to remove is a political statement. The fact that it is on a 15 year old piece of crap says "and she's broke too".
Sigh.
But to your point, when I can afford it, I am buying Honda's hybrid.

3. Conspicuous consumption? Or conspicuous tastelessness. |
|
It would be simpler overall and easier on the environment if they just wrote "I have more money than taste" across each of their foreheads.

Edited because I read the OP too quickly, thinking the Hummer limo was the guy's--in fact he's just the driver, so I'm sure he doesn't care what he's driving.
And 20/hr for driving is pretty good!
BUT-- Hummers are aesthetically so disgusting.
I really must talk to my sweet Adrien Brody about getting rid of his. :(

5. $20/hr is a great wage for a single person, it's disgusting that |
|
corporate america doesn't want American citizens to even have good $12/hr paying jobs, never mind the gab about eliminating the minimum wage...

6. I saw one of those in San Antonio about a year ago, |
|
we were riding with a couple we know down there and we pulled up alongside it..we were having a big discussion about the kind of ride it would have and that it just had to be a rough ride.. So Shelley rolls down her window and asked the guys in the limo how the thing rides...and they said "not that good really" and then all the kids in the car gave us a big friendly wave.
There were a bunch of them in there. There were a lot of military training graduations that weekend, probably a bunch of soldiers out on a frolic after graduation.

8. I just saw a stretch rolls silver cloud |
|
um..."limo" in downtown SF this afternoon. it was a tasteful shade of white, had lightly tinted windows with 4 etched glass windows. I was sitting on the Stockton st side of Union Square talking to homeless buddy, he said " man that beats the stretch Yugo."
this thing was bigger, heavier and uglier than any hummer I've seen so far. and wft is up with stretching a car like a rolls, kind of like guilding diamonds.
