US woman 'strangles Rottweiler' that attacked her 8 lb Terrier
A Florida woman is under investigation for allegedly strangling a neighbour's Rottweiler after it attacked her Yorkshire terrier.
Rox, a 130-pound Rottweiler lunged at the demure eight-pound terrier, called Candy, in the street.

Candy's owner admits she then threw a beer bottle at the dog and kicked it.

A witness statement from Rox's owner says the woman then grabbed the animal by it collar and choked it, slamming its head against the side of the house.

The woman, who says she weighs about the same as the dog, says her actions were in self defence and she did not intend to kill the animal, who died of strangulation.

17. what ?
I do know a woman who took a snake bite to protect her dog, but this tops it. Attacking a 60 kg Rottweiler takes a lot of -pardon me- balls. No way anyone would do it for any reason but self-defense.

2. wow but you know the beeb
They do like that British humor when it comes to animal stories.

If the woman actually did strangle the Rottweiler who attacked her dog, then I can only imagine the physical courage it took. Because I was attacked by a neighbor's lab and I'm still flabbergasted to know what I could have done to save myself if yelling hadn't gotten the dog off me. A 130 pound dog is all muscle and can easily kill a 120 pound woman. You are at its mercy.

4. Sorry, but . . .

. . . I may have panicked and done the same thing (without the intent to kill). I am terrified of big dogs that attack.

8. the lady went too far
The dog wasn't attacking HER....SHE was the real attacker.
If the rottweiler had lived, he probably would have been stunned and had learned a lesson. Unfortunately the dog didn't get another chance to learn.

That lady should get a hefty fine, at the very least.

Big dogs are scary, but little dogs can be as mean or meaner. They don't bite as hard, that's all. People would have a different view if she strangled a yorkie for attacking her chihuahua.

5. Sorry but I would do the same thing
I've worked with dogs all my life and there are very few methods of stopping a dog bent on attack. One is with water but if you don't have a good garden hose with a decent amount of water pressure handy, you use other methods and choking is one of the others.

If the dog's owners did not have the dog under control, or confined, they are the ones at fault. A 130 pound Rott could kill an 8 pound dog with one snap.

7. Serves the dog right
People don't need pets that can kill so easily, especially in cities.

10. Bats pipes
work well too, a body needs a tool in that situation, and some strength, but to completely snuff him out and keep it tight was wrong.

12. If a Rottweiler were attacking my cat I would kill it too
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 07:03 PM by Cheswick2.0
She had a right to save her dogs life. Her dog was not the one attacking and that Rottweiler should never have been free. Rottweilers are bread to kill and can not be trusted around smaller animals anymore than pittbulls can.

13. You got me with the cat scenario
If that dog was attacking one of my cats
I would use deadly force to stop him if need be.

15. That's just not true of all Rotties
Rotties by nature are gentle, very loyal animals. When raised right, they are not a danger to humans or other animals. I agree that some are bred and raised to be guard dogs or attack dogs but that is not all of them. We had one in our family that the most loveable, gentle animal that never even knew he could be mean.

16. You know, it's kinda funny
but I used to wrestle with a friends Rottweiler a few years back. There was a certain way I could grab that dog, and without applying much force, completely incapacitate it. You do it accidentally once or twice, and you learn to avoid grabbing it that way. Of course, I outweighed the dog by over 100 lbs.

18. It's sad that the Rotty died, but I'd do the same thing as that woman
Anybody who thinks a Rottweiler is a 'cute'n'cuddly' is outta their minds. A woman (Diane Whipple) in San Francisco was ripped to shreds not so long ago. If the owner cannot control a dog like that they have to be ready for the consequences, whether that's going to prison (as in the Whipple case) or having their dog's death on their hands.
