Poll question: Do you hate it when people put lots of smilies in their posts?
Kinda like this? :D

Or this? :eyes:

What about this one?

And, as you can see,, I'm not sure what to think. Oh well. Do you know that men with small wieners have big guns and SUVs? :wow:

1. What's Up With That Sig Picture?

I've been meaning to ask you about it for some time. I didn't want to display my ignorance should he turn out to be some cultural icon that only the clueless would fail to recognize. Is he from one of the 'Dr. Who' series?

The British have always had a greater grasp at free expression; you'd never see anything like "Blake's 7" in American mainstream television, circa 1978 - not really in 2000, and definitely not in 2004.

Close, but it isn't 'Dr. Who' I'm afraid. :-)

'Blake's 7' is akin to "The Dirty Dozen" in space. Roj Blake, a political prisoner - who was described by Kerr Avon at one point as a "bleeding heart who'll get us all killed" leads a ragtag group of criminals to fight a far more corrupt Federation.

Some episodes sadly end up looking campy, but not too many. And it's very bold stuff - for 1978 or now.

6. At Least I Got Its Country of Origin Correct
I just visited the official 'Blake's 7' website. It looks more interesting and imaginative than other shows like 'Battlestar Galactica' that sprang up in the wake of 'Star Wars'' success.

B7 had been in production before Star Wars came out in England. The production staff were terrified that B7 would be a flop, because Star Wars had just come out in England, complete with fancy effects.

Thanks for looking at the B7, BTW. I'm looking forward to the sequel, and the DVDs coming to America - though I suspect buying the UK set and converting them to NTSC on my own would yield higher quality (BFS Video always does things on the cheap.)

However, B7 has ALWAYS had something Star Wars could never get a proper grasp on: Plot, suspense, and character - and those will hold up over time far more than special effects ever can. The Star Wars heroes are goody-goody toddlers compared to the more realistic gaggle that is Blake's 7. (now think of SW episodes 1 and 2 (and likely 3) and wince at how crapulent SW truly is.)

As for Battlestar Galactica... BG had a decent premise, but it would have been a better miniseries and even better if they they didn't lose direction. (Blake's 7, season 3, kinda lost direction but season 4, especially the latter half, really did a 180 and improved immensely...)

Edit: That's all by comparison, of course. I do rather like the original SW trilogy (eps 4-6 as they're contemporarily known by). But B7's lack of effects is made up by more daring plotlines and a more diverse group of people.

3. I don't mind either way
I don't use them all that much, but it doesn't bother if people do. :)

4. All I know is
I don't have any guns or SUV's. But I ain't John Holmes either, although no one's complained.
