what is your favorite pizza place? The reason why I ask, at one time I lived in Chicago, left in 1977. At that time the all time favorite place was Ginos or Jeno's, not sure of the spelling. It was located off of Michigan Avenue and I think Superior, Unos was second favorite. During my time in Chicago the lines were a block long to get into the place. Is it still as popular today? Does anyone have a recipe for their crust? It was the best pizza, cannot find tasty pizza like it here. We have Uno's here but does not taste the same either.

The BEST pizza. There's also a Gino's North (just a block down the street, on Granville, by the Red Line stop. :-))

I thought there were two but just couldn't remember. Are they still as busy as in the 70's? Gosh, they had good pizza.
There was also another rest. we would frequent, not sure if it was called the Mushroom or it could have started with a G, it was a wine and cheese down below of a building, I think Rush street area, and there was Melvin's a hamburger type of joint, we would eat there and people watch.
Any way, do you know where I could find the recipe for Gino's pizza?

|
That building is gone now, isn't it? I so rarely get downtown anymore, but used to work in that area.
I didn't realize the one on Granville was related.
Uno's and Due's also are excellent. For thin-crust pizza, there's Home Run Inn on the South Side and in Darien.

I liked that Gino's a lot. And oh, my God, the pizza was wonderful.
Uno's and Due's are also pretty decent. But Gino's is the best.

There's a Gino's carryout place on Green Bay Road in north Evanston. I have only driven past...the pizza would be cold by the time I got home with it.
Did you notice the sun is coming out? The wind still is wicked, though.

Lou Malnati's for stuffed. The best thin crust I've ever had was from Niles House of Pizza (I grew up in Niles). Their crust was the best. Thin and crispy. Never soggy. Too bad they went out of business awhile back. I've haven't had good thin crust since.
The pizza in Phoenix sucks. Thin crust is non-existent, and thick/stuffed is always soggy. The only place that has anything that resembles decent pizza is Oregano's.
If anyone knows of great stuffed, or thin crust pizza in the Phoenix area, please speak up. :-)

Phoenix has terrible pizza.
I'm trying to find recipes to make my own. Pizza is expensive, so I might as well try my luck rather then waste money.

We could never get the sauce right. Trader Joe's has good crust, but we use it to make thin or medium crust, not thick or stuffed.

try the trader joe's marinara sauce that comes in a can. You'd be surprised how good that works for homemade pizza.

You can cut it up and sprinkle it on the pizza when it's done for extra flavor.

NYPD is not bad. And oregano's can be decent. And if you want to make your own pizza, I suggest you go to defalco's on scottsdale road and buy their dough. It's really good. If you have one of those pizza stones, you can make better pizza than in any restaurant. I used to do it all the time when i lived in tempe.

Left there in '86.
We never had Niles House of Pizza thin crust. We always went to Rosatis on Milwaukee Avenue or Riggios on Oakton. We lived on Milwaukee Ave just south of Main Street.

I liked Rosati's and Riggio's too, but Niles House was the best. It was on Milwaukee in the little triangle between Milwaukee, Harlem and Howard. I lived right near Milwaukee and Harlem, in the Niles school district. Went to Niles West H.S.
I moved to Gurnee in '89 after getting married, and to Phoenix in 2000.
Check your PM. :-)

I like Pequod's for "Chicago style" and Pizza Metro on Damen for authentic thin crust Italian pizza. Pizza Metro also has the best handmade ravioli and lasagna I've ever had for less than ten bucks and they deliver until 2AM! :toast:
