Movies that you thought would suck, but turned out great
As a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings" books, I was truly scared that the movies would suck ass & bomb. Glad to see I was wrong.

I also didn't understand what the hype was about the original "Matrix" movie, expecting it to be a typical crappy sci-fi movie with just cool effects. I mean, it had Keanu Reeves... how good could it be? I ended up loving it & regretting I didn't see it on the big screen.

1. "Wrong Turn"
I didn't even pay much attention to the commercials when this was released. A friend told me that it was better than one would expect so I went to see it and couldn't stop gripping the arms of my seat. It was so intense and suspenseful. Great horror movie--especially when you are seeing it for the first time.

6. Agreed.
Not a favorite by any means, but definitely a step above most movies of its type.

2. Waterworld
It really didn't suck.

Not that I would want to see it again.

Or own it.

But it wasn't as horrible as I had imagined it would be.

10. Definitely sucked less . . .
Than advertised.

I think people (that is, Show People) don't LIKE Kevin Costner. I don't follow the celebrity mags or even Variety, so I don't have a clue why.

4. I don't remember a lot of it...but what I do remember was great...
There was a group of kids to our left talking the entire time, and it didn't allow for the suspense to build up at all.

5. Fight Club
I thought it was going to be an asinine test-fest.

Turned out to be pretty good.

7. Really? I have to admit, I thought fight club was preachy and way too long
I got the fuckin point, they didn't need to ram it down my throat for an additional thirty minutes. Hence the reason why it makes a much better book; one can afford to take philosophical tangents without worrying so much about visuals, plot, or the audience's fragile attention spans.

The pacing was unfortunately uneven, in that it started out funny and quirky and smartly edited, but seemed to lose momentum by the end.

Finally, I might be able to take a bitter critique of consumerism a little more seriously if it weren't coming from the mouths of world-famous multimillionaire actors who have made their careers from it.

I'm sorry, but I feel like I'm the only person on Earth who wasn't totally impressed with that movie. All of this is of course merely my opinion.

Flame away, everyone.

8. Finding Nemo
The commercials made it seem like some stupid cute talking animal picture. I wasn't prepared for the wit and depth of character.

9. A Christmas Story
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 02:47 PM by Mike Daniels
The original trailer for the movie was horrid (made it look like a noisy, overactive, slapstick picture).

It wasn't until years later and after several word of mouths from friends that we went to see it when it was reissued in the theaters.

Of course, no Christmas is now complete without multiple viewings of that film.

Incidentally, the DVD has the trailer as a bonus item and it's still as bad as I remembered.

11. Fright Night
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 03:10 PM by deutsey
I don't know why, but I just thought this was going to be a stupid '80s-style teen flick with vampires.

After seeing it, I thought it was a very well done, entertaining movie that gave a refreshing spin to vampire movies. I find it kind of creepy to boot.

15. I just saw
Fright NIght for the first time on the Sci Fi channel a few weeks ago. It was acutally a fun movie. I'm not a huge fan of horror because I get so creeped out I can't even watch the film. But this was a fun, rollicking good time!

20. "The Butterfly Effect" and "The Village"
The critics panned both of them, and I found both to be enjoyable.

I've never claimed to have particularly refined taste, though... :-)

22. Dazed & Confused.
I refused to watch it for quite a while; when I finally gave in (my husband wanted me to see it because he was sure I'd like it), I liked it so much I bought it.

23. "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"
My date and I only saw that movie because we were seriously late to the film we intended to see, so we just went to "Harold and Kumar" since it was starting next. To our immense surprise, it was funny as hell, and it really floored us with how intelligent it was.

By the way, the movie we intended to see that night was "The Manchurian Candidate" remake, which, when we eventually finally saw it, we thought it stank.
