Ugly ratlike critter no longer extinct....

stuffed 'almiqui', an insectivore native to Cuba , is presented by a worker, for a photo opportunity at the Cuban Museum of Natural Science on Tuesday Sept. 23, 2003 in Havana, Cuba. A living example of the insectivore -believed for years to be extinct- has been found in the island's eastern mountains, a Cuban news agency reported. The last reported sightings of the creatures were in 1972 in the eastern province of Guantanamo, and 25 years later in 1999 in the eastern province of Holguin. (AP Photo/Cristobal Herrera)

1. here's a whoo hoo for ugly ratlike critter
I hope it does better than the Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers rediscovered in Cuba in the 1980s only to be made extinct after all when they cut all the trees in their forest down. Not that we can talk...we deliberately cut down all the trees in the last forest for them in the U.S. (the Singer Tract) after thoughtfully filming them for posterity so we would know what we lost!

does that rodent have a beak?

9. Not ugly!
He's kind of cute. I seldom refer to any animal as 'ugly'. Just the attitudes that people have. Some of THOSE are ugly!

11. well it looks like a cross between
a kiwi bird and a rat.

OK, maybe it's not ugly, but I doubt we'll soon be hearing the expression "cute as an almiqui".

21. Nah. The one on the right looks like it is capable of feeling
sympathy for others.

One the pictures is of a rat-like vermin, which makes alot of people cringe and recoil. The other one is covered with fur, and has a long nose.
