And how does that relate to a man's ability to chose to cry? Men have been programmed by society to believe that if they chose to reveal their feelings, they aren't masculine. It's BULLSHIT and has nothing to do with genes- it's just programming by society.

|
'Ability to choose to cry' ? Any research to back up that men - or any gender 'choose' to cry.
Men (often) reveal all kinds of feelings - often anger an aggressiveness.
There are biological disincentives to showing perceived weakness and avoiding confrontation and these are gender roles in some species - including primates. Are you asserting that human genetic programming doesnt incluide aspects and remnants of this pattern ?
Sure, these things also are inculcated into cultural and social modes and mores of behavior but that hardly means they have no - or even a small - biological basis.

27. again, and I asked this: |
|
Do you have ANY proof that the ability to cry is genetically determined and is different in the two genders? Crying has NOTHING to do with genetic differences between men and women- it's entirely a result of social programming. We have been programed to think men do not/should not cry and that crying is something only women do. There are no physiological differences in the two genders that would make the act of crying different.

Crying is a biological funtion. It's absurd to claim its entirely the result of 'social programming', That would imply that humans or other animals (primarily primates) didnt cry or not cry until there were 'societies' to do the programming.
I didnt claim genetically determined, it is genetically influenced and perhaps on secondary basis. TO assert that are no genetic and behavioral differences between the genders is just plain false.
The 'act' of crying is not the same as the 'motivation' and the meachanism by which this occurs involving the brain. Whatever stimuli there are will be affected by gender-based and individual receptiveness and sensitivity (in the biological sense) and various brain characteristics (some of them geneder determined) - which may also be influenced by social conditioning and inhibitions. That hardly makes it 'entirely a result of social programming'.

You said: Crying is a biological funtion. It's absurd to claim its entirely the result of 'social programming', That would imply that humans or other animals (primarily primates) didnt cry or not cry until there were 'societies' to do the programming. Oh really? Strictly a biological function? That's true- but do we only cry when we need to rinse our eyes of foreign particles or to guard against infections? I hope you see that we humans do not cry JUST to clean our eyes- we cry to express emotions. TO assert that are no genetic and behavioral differences between the genders is just plain false. Duh it's false :eyes: I never said there were no genetic differences between the sexes- only that the genetic differences between the two genders relating to the physiological formation of the organs necessary to cry. It seems to me that you think that men really don't cry because there is a more deeper genetic basis for the reason why women seem to cry more than men- which is odd. Do you not think society has sent a clear message to men that crying is a sign of weakness and something a "real" man doesn't do? How do you explain why women cry more-and this behavior is accepted- and that men crying is seen as an aberration from the normal idea of masculinity? It just seems to me that men chose not to cry due to the belief that it is seen as being not masculine- and masculinity is defined by society. Keep in mind that there are some cultures where men crying IS excepted because crying is not seen as something that is judged on gender. In the US, crying is seen as a feminine trait. For men to cry it is then seen as being "girly". Think back to childhood. How many boys were told to stop crying and "be a man"? Societal norms are INCREDIBLY powerful and I think you underestimate just how powerful it is in determining what we perceive as being normal behavior for the genders.

Most every episode of the tv sitcom "The Wonder Years" left me with either moist eyes or, at least, a serious lump in my throat. The voiceovers at each episode's conclusion gave an adult perspective to his memories of coming of age in the 1960's. In so many ways, I WAS Kevin Arnold and it really moved me. It helped that my partner was always sitting right next to me, and was just as moved-I didn't feel quite so alone and unmanly.

42. Not true--sensitive guys fail to "get chicks" in their twenties only if |
|
they follow the typical twentyish pattern of lusting after cold, cynical women who keep their supermodel figures by stomping energetically on men's egos.
Meanwhile, there are probably sensitive young woman longing in vain for the guys who are heading back into the fray to get stomped on by another high-maintenance brat.

To be a truly sensitive man requires much more strength I think as well. Weaker men like to mask every painful emotion under the guise of anger, aggression, or the "I don't give a f*ck attitude". Men who can open their hearts and feel that freedom are truly a gift to those of us who are a part of their life. I like big, manly men with even bigger, softer hearts. :D

In my 25 years on the planet I've managed to seek out the most jerky, stereotypical "frat boy" guys on the planet, and it never worked. Cute, but dumb as bricks. And the whole time there was a guy that I met at work that I always thought was just "such a nice guy". But *so nice* I could never date him.
Lo and behold, now I'm infatuated with him. Go figure. So, nice guys can get the girl (even in their 20s). He was my friend, and that was what ended up being important.

57. Sensitive New Age Guys is a Christine Lavin song |
|
lyrics
Sensitive New Age Guys
Who like to talk about their feelings? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who's into crystals, into healing? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who like to dress like Richard Simmons? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who are hard to tell from women? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who like to cry at weddings? Who think boxing is upsetting? Who tapes "Thirty Something" on their VCR, Who's got "Baby on Board" stickers on their cars, oh, (Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
Whose last names are hypenated? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who like "Three Men and a Baby" a movie I hated? (Sensitive new age guys.) Whose consciousness is constantly raising? (Sensitive new age guys.) Whose tax free income is amazing? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who thinks that red meat is disgusting? Who's into UFO's channeling, and usting? Who believes us when we say we've got premenstrual syndrome? Who doesn't know who plays in the Seattle Kingdome?
Who likes music that repetitious? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who likes music that's repetitious? (Sensitive new age guys.) Who's concerned about your orgasm? (silence) Well, I guess it's more important that they have 'em. (Sensitive new age guys.) Who carries the baby on his back? Who thinks Shirley MacLaine is on the inside track? Who always sings on sing-alongs, Even when they can't stand stupid sing-along songs?
