Lets have a Bruce Springsteen sing along!
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 04:52 PM by Longgrain
FOR YOU

(Debbi801)

Princess cards she sends me with her regards
barroom eyes shine vacancy, to see her you gotta look hard
Wounded deep in battle, I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted
To her Cheshire smile. I'll stand on file, she's all I ever wanted.
But you let your blue walls get in the way of these facts
honey, get your carpetbaggers off my back
you wouldn't even give me time to cover my tracks.
You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks".
But they're not what I came for, and I'm sure you see that too
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency
and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free

Crawl into my ambulance, your pulse is getting weak
reveal yourself all now to me girl while you've got the strength to speak
Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue with their oxygen masks
But I could give it all to you now if only you could ask.
And don't call for your surgeon even he says it's too late
It's not your lungs this time, it's your heart that holds your fate
Don't give me money, honey, I don't want it back
you and your pony face and your union jack
well take your local joker and teach him how to act
I swear I was never that way even when I really cracked
Didn't you think I knew that you were born with the power of a locomotive
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound?
And your Chelsea suicide with no apparent motive
you could laugh and cry in a single sound.

And your strength is devastating in the face of all these odds
Remember how I kept you waiting when it was my turn to be the god?

You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach
Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach
And the band they played the homecoming theme as I caressed your cheek
That ragged, jagged melody she still clings to me like a leech.
But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way
like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way
We were both hitchhikers but you had your ear tuned to the roar
of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore
So you, left to find a better reason than the one we were living for
and it's not that nursery mouth I came back for
It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor
cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors
And who am I to ask you to lick my sores?
And you should know that's true...
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but you did not need my urgency
I came for you, for you, I came for you, but your life was one long emergency
and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free
;-)

1. Hey thanks!!
I got a bunch of words wrong in my reply to you. I was doing it off memory, since my CD is in the car and the album is at home, and I'm at work.

I'll be singing that the whole way home today, I think.

5. When I was in college, my friends thought it was funny to get a little
happy and sing this a capella in public!

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again

Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tra

6. I'll see how much I remember off the top of my head...
The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Live a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy orbison singing for the lonely
Hey thats me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again.
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and your thinking that maybe we aint that young any more
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You aint a beauty but hey you're all right
And that's alright with me....

I need to leave work now so that's all of the song I can post.

See ya later.

3. It's Hard To Be a Saint in the City
IT'S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY

I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra
I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a supernova
I could walk like Brando right into the sun
Then dance just like a Casanova
With my blackjack and jacket and hair slicked sweet
Silver star studs on my duds like a Harley in heat
When I strut down the street I could hear its heartbeat
The sisters fell back and said "Don't that man look pretty"
The cripple on the corner cried out "Nickels for your pity"
Them gasoline boys downtown sure talk gritty
It's so hard to be a saint in the city

I was the king of the alley, mama, I could talk some trash
I was the prince of the paupers crowned downtown at the beggar's bash
I was the pimp's main prophet I kept everything cool
Just a backstreet gambler with the luck to lose
And when the heat came down it was left on the ground
The devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street
Showin' me a hand I knew even the cops couldn't beat
I felt his hot breath on my neck as I dove into the heat
It's so hard to be a saint when you're just a boy out on the street

And the sages of the subway sit just like the living dead
As the tracks clack out the rhythm their eyes fixed straight ahead
They ride the line of balance and hold on by just a thread
But it's too hot in these tunnels you can get hit up by the heat
You get up to get out at your next stop but they push you back down in your seat
Your heart starts beatin' faster as you struggle to your feet
Then you're outa that hole and back up on the street

And them South Side sisters sure look pretty
The cripple on the corner cries out "Nickels for your pity"
And them downtown boys sure talk gritty
It's so hard to be a saint in the city

11. My first was Rosalita
Tell him this is his last chance
To get his daughter in a fine romance
Cause the record company, Rosie
Just gave me a big advance
.
.
I know a pretty little place down in Southern California
Down San Diego way
There's a little cafe
Where they play guitar all night and all day
I can hear them in the back room stummin
So hold tight baby cause don't you know Daddy's comin......

Oooo - that song still gives me chills

7. Here in north east Ohio
Back in eighteen-o-three
James and Danny Heaton
Found the ore that was linin' yellow creek
They built a blast furnace
Here along the shore
And they made the cannon balls
That helped the union win the war

Here in Youngstown
Here in Youngstown
My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown

Well my daddy worked the furnaces
Kept 'em hotter than hell
I come home from 'Nam worked my way to scarfer
A job that'd suit the devil as well
Taconite, coke and limestone
Fed my children and made my pay
Then smokestacks reachin' like the arms of god
Into a beautiful sky of soot and clay

Here in Youngstown
Here in Youngstown
My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown

Well my daddy come on the 0hio works
When he come home from world war two
Now the yards just scrap and rubble
He said, "Them big boys did what Hitler couldn't do"
These mills they built the tanks and bombs
That won this country's wars
We sent our sons to Korea and Vietnam
Now we're wondering what they were dyin' for

Here in Youngstown
Here in Youngstown
My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown

From the Monongaleh valley
To the Mesabi iron range
To the coal mines of Appalacchia
The story's always the same
Seven-hundred tons of metal a day
Now sir you tell me the world? changed
Once I made you rich enough
Rich enough to forget my name

In Youngstown
In Youngstown
My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown

When I die I don't want no part of heaven
I would not do heavens work well
I pray the devil comes and takes me
To stand in the fiery furnaces of hell

I love this song.

I love this song too-- I always wonder how many people "get" this song.

and I thought I would faint. I was like a hysterical teenager, screaming and jumping up and down.

He never plays For You in concert - I hadn't heard it since 1976!!

13. Here's One more i alway like to hear...
4TH OF JULY, ASBURY PARK (SANDY)

Sandy the fireworks are hailin' over Little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stoney faces left stranded on this warm July
Down in town the circuit's full with switchblade lovers so fast, so shiny, so sharp
As the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers on the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York virgins by the score

Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl, my baby

Now the greasers they tramp the streets or get busted for sleeping on the beach all night
Them boys in their high heels, ah Sandy, their skins are so white
And me I just got tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades bangin' them pleasure machines
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk where they promise to unsnap their jeans
And you know that tilt-a-whirl down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And they kept me spinnin'
I didn't think I'd ever get off

Oh Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life on the water
Runnin', laughin' 'neath the boardwalk with the boss's daughter
I remember, Sandy girl, now baby

Sandy, that waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me
I spoke with her last night, she said she won't set themselves on fire for me anymore
She worked that joint under the boardwalk, she was always the girl you saw boppin' down on the beach with the radio
The kids say last night she was dressed like a star in one of them cheap little seaside bars,
and I saw her parked with Loverboy out on the Kokomo
Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin' fortunes better than they do
For me this boardwalk life for me is through
You ought to quit this scene too

Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
This pier lights our carnival life forever
Oh love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever

14. LOlL -- That's the second Springsteen song I got into!
Thing is, when I first heard Springsteen, I didn't like him at all. I don't tend to like that kind of music. (I always liked harder music.) I didn't get it. Then I heard those two songs, really liked the lyrics, and started paying more attention. I started to like him, but as far as all the major fuss about him, I still didn't get it. Everybody said you really had to see him live. So I went to see him ("The River" tour). And then I got it--big time! :-) Haven't looked back. Seen him a number of times, including a couple of summers ago at Fenway Park in Boston.

19. Yeah...
I loved the carnival imagery of the lyrics and the kind of twanging waviness of the guitars...It's years before I had a chance to visit the Jersey Shore, but as soon as I got there, that song was right in my head...

29. My SO went through the same thing
A real "rock snob" - preferred the Clash, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson - thought Springsteen was too "pop" or something, and didn't understand why I was sort of religious about the music.

Then he saw a live concert.

'nuff said.

That is my all time favorite Springsteen song. Know why???????

My real name is Sandie. :)

I grew up in NJ and about a hour from where Springsteen grew up. Asbury Park was my favorite place on the Shore until it just died. Very sad.

23. The Promised Land
I didn't get into The Boss until I was in Berlin. I bought a copy of the three-CD live set...and The Promised Land was on there. It brings back memories of seeing the Rockies through a motorcycle visor when you've just crossed into South Dakota going west.

On a rattlesnake speedway in the Utah desert
I pick up my money and head back into town
Driving cross the Waynesboro county line
I got the radio on and I'm just killing time
Working all day in my daddy's garage
Driving all night chasing some mirage
Pretty soon little girl I'm gonna take charge

The dogs on main street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start

The dogs on main street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

There's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

The dogs on main street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

24. Spirit In The Night!
Crazy Janey and her mission man were back in the alley tradin'
hands
'long came Wild Billy with his friend G-man all duded up for
Saturday night
Well Billy slammed on his coaster brakes and said anybody wanna
go on up to Greasy Lake
It's about a mile down on the dark side of route eighty-eight
I got a bottle of rose so let's try it
We'll pick up Hazy Davy and Killer Joe and I'll take you all out
to where the gypsy angels go
They're built like light
and they dance like spirits in the night (all night) in the
night (all night)
Oh, you don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night (all night), in the night (all night)
Stand right up now and let it shoot through you

Well now Wild young Billy was a crazy cat and he shook some dust
out of his coonskin cap.
He said, "Trust some of this it'll show you where you're
at, or at least it'll help you really feel it"
By the time we made it up to Greasy Lake I had my head out the
window and Janey's fingers were in the cake
I think I really dug her 'cause I was too loose to fake
I said, "I'm hurt." She said, "Honey let me heal
it".
And we danced all night to a soul fairy band
and she kissed me just right like only a lonely angel can
She felt so nice, just as soft as a spirit in the night (all
night)
In the night (all night). Janey don't know what she do to you
Like a spirit in the night (all night), in the night (all night)
Stand right up and let her shoot through me.

Now the night was bright and the stars threw light on Billy and
Davy
dancin' in the moonlight
They were down near the water in a stone mud fight
Killer Joe gone passed out on the lawn
Well now Hazy Davy got really hurt, he ran into the lake in just
his socks and a shirt
Me and Crazy Janey was makin' love in the dirt singin' our
birthday songs
Janey said it was time to go
So we closed our eyes and said goodbye to gypsy angel row, felt
so right
Together we moved like spirits in the night, all night
Baby don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
Stand right up and let it shoot right through you

26. Another classic:
Thunder Road

The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide `neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
>From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

27. My favorite...
Born to Run

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
and steppin' out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
and strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
girl I want to know if love is real

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
but there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we'll live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when
we're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go
and we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us
baby we were born to run

30. Is there any other musician whose live performances
are so much more electrifying than his recorded ones?

Don't get me wrong - I've loved the recordings ever since I first heard them around '75. They were enough to make me a HUGE fan right from the get-go (but then again, wouldn't "It's a town full of losers
and I'm pulling out of here to win" speak to most high schoolers?).

But to this day, I don't enjoy them for a week or two after a concert, because they sound so pallid compared to the show I just saw (never saw him without the E-Street Band - to me, a concert w/o Clarence just isn't a Springsteen concert)

31. my favorite
You got your book, baby, with all your fears
Let me, honey, and I'll catch your tears
I'll take your sorrow if you want me to
Come tomorrow that's what I'll do
Listen to me

Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart

Well you say you got no new dreams to touch
You feel like a stranger, babe, who knows too much
Well you come home late and get undressed
You lie in bed, feel this emptiness
Well, listen to me

Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart

'Til every river runs dry
Until the sun, honey, is torn from the sky
'Til every fear you've felt bursts free
And gone tumblin' down into the sea
Listen to me

Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart
Janey, don't you lose heart

32. What a great thread!
It turns out other DUers love "Thunder Road" and "For You" as much as I do.

I'm also very fond of "Growing Up." Is this place a refuge for all those of us who love "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ"?
