SE PA DUers: My funk/reggae/blues band is playing in Berwyn Friday night!
I've posted a message about this before, but I thought I'd say it again since it's closer. My band, The New Kings of Rhythm, will be playing at the Berwyn Tavern in Berwyn, PA this Friday night from 9:30 to 1:30. We play original, classic and obscure blues, funk and reggae. We recently expanded to a 10-piece lineup, and I'm not just blowing my own horn when I say we sound AMAZING. (I'm also not blowing my own horn because I play keyboards.) Honestly, we've never sounded as good as we have at the last few gigs.

The influences are many and varied, but include James Brown (and all the James Brown "family" combinations), George Clinton (and all the P-Funk permutations), Fela Kuti, Hendrix, lots of obscure Jamaican reggae and dub, T-Bone Walker, and countless others.

Here's the important info. Hope to see some of you there. I'll be the short white guy playing keys. :)

Your influences are right up my alley. I'll be back in Philly in November--do you guys regularly play in SE PA? I'll definitely check you out then!

7. I would be none of those. :)
I had a previous engagement and couldn't make that particular event. The cops showed up not long after that picture was taken, I believe. However, the sax player on the left has been on "Homicide" and an MTV promo (he played a kid who got a hold of some "bad music videos").

13. As far as the reggae....

Do you cover any Barrington Levy or Carlton Livingston songs?

How about in the soul/funk section any Al Green songs? (Al's my all-time favorite :))

14. It's quite possible...
Half the time I have no idea who the artists are, so the odds are pretty good. Not sure about Al. I'll have to look into it.

15. Here are some of their best known songs:
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 09:24 PM by TroubleMan
Barrington Levy:

Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway)
Under Mi Sensi
Murderer
Too Experienced
Shine Eyed Girl
Collie Weed
Black Roses
Be Strong

Carlton Livingston:

Trodding Through The Jungle
100 Weight of Collie Weed
Itch It Up Operator
Maria
Rumors

.....

Carlton Livingston is very obscure, but very good. Barrington Levy is one of the most famous reggae and dancehall singers of the 80's and 90's (he has a style similar to the old roots but his beats usually are early dancehall, but some are rocksteady, ska, and roots).

Or do your dub and roots songs sound more like U Roy or the Studio One albums...maybe Lee Scratch Perry or like Ken Booth?

Or do you do stuff like The Mighty Diamonds, Burning Spear, or Black Uhuru? (they all have a similar style to Marley)?

Al Green should be self explanatory.

If you provide a list of songs you do (or if you don't know the names, some of the lyrics), I probably can name a lot of them.

Sorry about all the questions, but I never get to have a good reggae discussion with anybody.:(

16. I wish I knew titles or lyrics...
But I can never hear our lead singer, and I never know the titles of most of the songs. We were supposed to open for Burning Spear once, if that tells you anything. :) (Promoter screwed up. We did open for Beres Hammond, though.)

A few titles off the top of my head:

Night Nurse
Curly Locks
Mellow Mood
Something in another language that sounds shockingly like "Sodomize My Mama"
Wa Do Dem
Uptown Top Ranking (and all the dubs and so forth that song was based on)

I'll try to catch our lead singer online, and he can tell me more.

18. Also..
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 09:45 PM by TroubleMan
Wa do dem is a dancehall song by Eek a Mouse.

Curly Locks was done by a lot of artists....I think it's originally an old ska song or maybe rocksteady, but I don't really know.

I think Mellow Mood is a Bob Marley song, but I don't have that one.

The soddomize one ???? maybe "Sadda dem" by Bouty Killah???? but that's about having sex with lots of women basically.

You got me on that one.

If you ever come to Florida, I'd like to see you guys perform. Sounds real good to me.

Since we have no ladies in the band. Mostly we do the other dubs.

22. The "sodomize" song:
Direct quote from the man in charge:

"Satta amas agahna" by the Abysinnians

But don't quote him on the spelling.

is one of my favorites. Practically invented modern blues guitar solos.
