What's the oldest TV theme song you can sing all the way through
without pausing?

I'm sorry to say I still know the entire Cheers theme song even though I haven't seen the show in 15 years, never watched it much then, and still don't know my own home telephone number more than a year after moving.

So here's a chance to date yourself forever with the oldest TV theme song you can sing without pausing.

12. Guess Again - the Lyrics to 'Bonanza' (and Lorne Green recorded it..)
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 11:16 PM by Rosco T.
We chased lady luck till we finally struck - Bonanza
With a gun and a rope and a hatful of hope
We planted our family tree
We got ahold of a potful of gold - Bonanza
With a horse and a saddle and a rig full of cattle
How rich can a fella be?
On this land we put our brand
Cartwright is the name
Fortune smiled the day we filed
The Ponderosa claim

Here in the west we're livin' in the best - Bonanza
If anyone fights any one of us
He's gonna fight with me

Hoss and Joe and Adam know
Every rock and pine
No one works, fights, or eats
Like those boys of mine

Here we stand in the middle of a grand - Bonanza
With a gun and a rope and a hatful of hope
We planted our family tree
We got ahold of a potful of gold - Bonanza
With a houseful of friends where the rainbow ends
How rich can a fella be?

On this land we put our brand
Cartwright is the name
Fortune smiled the day we filed
The Ponderosa claim

Here in the west we're livin' in the best - Bonanza
With the friendliest, fightenist, lovingest band
That ever set foot in the promised land
And we're happier than them all
That's why we call it
- Bonanza -
- Bonanza -
- Bonanza -

19. Strike Two - I Love Lucy theme lyrics (and yes, Desi recorded it)
There’s a certain couple that I know.
They’re strictly lovebirds,
A pair of turtle dove birds.
He’s a guy who wants the world to know.
So ev’ry day You’ll hear him say
I Love Lucy and she loves me,

We’re as happy as two can be,
Sometimes we quarrel but then again
How we love making up again.

Lucy kisses like no one can,
She’s my missus and I’m her man;
And life is heaven you see
Cause I Love Lucy
Yes I Love Lucy and Lucy loves me.

32. I knew Andy G song had lyrics
something about the fishin' hole.

I'm vaguely worried there is something in Lone Ranger like

A _____ of ____
a cloud of dust
and a hearty Hi-O-Silver

but I had already posted. So, I may be outta here as soon as someone old shows up.

62. Actually..
..just kidding. But did you "Bewitched" had lyrics?

Bewitched, Bewitched, you’ve got me in your spell.
Bewitched, Bewitched, you know your craft so well.
Before I knew what I was doing I looked in your eyes
That brand of woo you’ve been brewin’ took me by surprise.

You witch, you witch, one thing is for sure.
That stuff you pitch just hasn’t got a cure.
My heart was under lock & key, but somehow it got unhitched
I never thought that I could be had
But now I’m caught and I’m kinda glad To be Bewitched.

We got a right to pick a little fight
Bonanza!
If anyone fights anyone of us
He's gotta fight with me!

We're not a one to saddle up and run,
Bonanza!
Anyone of us who starts a little fuss
knows he can count on me!

One for four
Four for one,
This we guarantee.

We got a right to pick a little fight
Bonanza!
If anyone fights anyone of us
He's gotta fight with me!

91. Have you been listening to Garrison Keillor?
I seem to remember that bit of information worked its way into one of his monologues. He also pointed out, most helpfully, that you can sing the Doxology ("Praise God, from whom all blessings flow...") to the tune of "Hernando's Hideaway."

As for my oldest singable theme song, I guess it's "The Mickey Mouse Club March."

Some hour-long episodes of The Mickey Mouse Club, not seen since 1957, came out on DVD last week. The intro is a great Fantasia-like sequence that I loved back then; what they've been showing all these decades is equivalent to The Simpsons' beginning with just the driveway and the couch...

44. And They're Very Politically Incorrect Lyrics
Especially the "wild as any Zulu" part:

* * * * *

Little Lulu, Little Lulu,
With freckles on her chin
Always in and out of trouble
But mostly always in.
Uses Daddy's necktie for the tail of her kite.
Uses Mommy's lipstick for the letters you write

Though the clock says 7:30
It's really after ten
Looks like Lulu's been repairing it again
Though you're wild as any Zulu
And you're just as hard to tame,
Little Lulu, I love you-you
Just the same, the same.
Little Lulu, I love you-you
Just the Same.

Keep them doggies movin'
Though they're disapprovin'

Don't try to understand'em

Soon we'll be living high and wide
Rawhide's calculating
My true love will be waiting
Be waiting at the end of my ride…

Yaw!
Move'em up, head'em out, head'em out, move'em up
Move'em up, head'em out–
Rawhide!
Ride'em out! Let'em out! Herd'em out! Cut'em out!
Cut'em in
Rawhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide!
Yah!

"Buffalo Bill Junior,
Buffalo Bill Junior,
He was the son of the son of a gun
Buffalo Bill Junior..."

"I've got a gang, you've got a gang,

But there's only one gang for me
Good old Andy's Gang!"

Green Acres is the place to be!

Farrrrrrrm living is the life for me!

Land spreadin' out so far and wide!

Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside!

Newwwwwww York is vhere I'd rahther stay!

I get allergic smelling hay!

I just adore a penthouse view!

Dahling, I love you, but give me Park Avenue!

The chores!

The stores!

Fresh air!

Times Square!

You are my wife!

Goodbye city life!

Green Acres, we are there!

48. Welcome Back Kotter
For some reason, I've had that little tune in my head for about a week. I remember watching WBK when I was a kid... I'm 34 now. And - I guess that I know the Laverne and Shirley tune too, straight through. UGH. Does this mean that I watched WAY TOO Much TV when I was a kid. Yep.

60. The Love Boat - Oh God!
A song for bad crooners. My brothers and I used to try to sing the worst version as a contest.

57. Branded
Chuck Connors, what a man! It just killed me every time to watch them break his sword and tear off his shoulder straps!

"All but one man died.
There at Bitter Creek.
And they say he ran away.

Branded, scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded, and you know you're a man.

Wherever you go, for the rest of your life
You must prove, you're a man."

73. Anyone remember the parody of that called "Stranded"
Stranded Stranded on the toilet bowl
What can you do when you're stranded
and you can't find a roll

Prove you're a man use the back of your hand...

I forget how it ended.

77. There are actually words to that one too
Gene Roddenberry wrote them - they were appalling. I don't have them handy, but I'm sure they're in cyberspace somewhere.

79. Here they are -
Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

This is a really old show. I remembered the song vaguely but then saw the show on Nickelodeon and memorized the words.
I thought it was really funny -- it mentions Krushchev at Idelwild (the old name for Kennedy Airport)

88. I Married Joan.
No, I'm not old enough to remember that show. Rather, I have a seven-volume collection of TV themes, covering the entire history of the medium. "I Married Joan" is about the oldest track of the series.
