4. I loved them. Saw them several times in Dallas. They were well |
|
regarded when they were together but you don't hear much about them anymore. One of the best late 60s bands, and that's saying a lot. I guess the kids would consider them a one hit wonder with " I Got a Line On You" and in the strictest sense of the term that would be correct but damn, they put out some great albums."Spirit," "Clear," "The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus," "The Family That Plays Together."Yeah, I'm a big fan.

10. I saw them open for Ike and Tina Turner in the Dallas Convention Cntr |
|
Arena. Must have been fall of 71 or spring of 72. I hitch hiked in from East Texas.
One of the greatest shows of my life.

14. I was there. Also saw them when James Cotton opened for them |
|
at State Fair and they were at the Texas Pop Festival in 1969 also.Saw them another time or two as well but the locations are fuzzy. They liked playing Dallas as did a lot of the big acts back then. Something to do with Big D's exceptionally beautiful and accomodating groupies.

Smoked hash oil using hot knives. Inspired the lyric "Hot knives, hot tomato!"

9. Randy California was one of the all time great guitarist, writer, singers. |
|
My favorite album of all time is Future Games/Kauhna Daydream.
It's never been released in full on CD. My vinyl disc is still playable but somewhat scratchy.
Huge loss to the world when Randy died saving his son from an undertow in Hawaii.

11. Yep. He was influenced directly by playing in a backing to Jimi Hendrix |
|
working his pre-Experience NYC club daze. He died saving his son. A gifted guitarist from Spirit.

|
Great song. Gave me goosebumps.
The Jan 2004 issue of Mojo has a wonderful, big article about Spirit and Randy California in it...If you haven't seen it, dig it up; lots of cool pictures.

My band tried to play that in the late sixties (I don't think it was the 70's yet). We were young teens and really couldn't pull it off but we thought that song was soooooooooo cool. :hippie:
