Somebody shoot me, good grief (another vocab. rant) |
|
I am listening to a playback presentation at work about job terminology and other such fun. Anyway, about 8 of the slides are labled, in large bold letters at the top of each slide:
Vocabulary and Anachronisms
anachronism n 1: something located at a time when it could not have existed or occurred 2: an artifact that belongs to another time 3: a person who seems to be displaced in time; who belongs to another age
I think the word you're looking for is acronym, dude.
And, he's talking about terms having lots of other 'psuedonyms' around the world...
pseu·do·nym ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sdn-m) n. A fictitious name, especially a pen name.
I think the word in that case is synonym.
Not only that, but he's making up words, too... like Anachronym... this is a high-up in the company, so it's not like I can really say anything, but geez.
He and Bush ought to get together for lunch...

6. I hate the tendency to develop "hip" jargon for the business world.... |
|
or any other employment setting, frankly. Especially grating to me is the use of acronyms and abbreviations in formal discussion with a mixed audience that clearly does not follow, and when saying the actual words is no more difficult. Example of the day, Shrub* discussing Tenet as DCI instead of Director, Central Intelligence.
(of course EVERYTHING he says pisses me off)

7. Yeah, I was having that discussion today with a coworker |

My two least favorite business jargon phrases are probably "moving forward" and "action items". Drives me crazy. I've been on conference calls where I swore they were speaking a different language, known as business-ese. :eyes:

I think we're going to have to call another meeting and develop an action plan to distribute the workload and meet our delivery date :7

I'll give that a try... after all, every working environment 'has it's own speak'... (yet another great one from the same annoying persentation).

People need to be people. We are all different. We need not be a class or caste society.
