1. Northeast PA -- just outside of Wilkes-Barre
tiny town where we have more cows than people

I moved here about 7 years ago from Massachusetts -- the part of the state where we do pronounce our "R's"

3. St Helens, England
An industrial town in the northwest of England about 7 miles out of Liverpool. Large towns are really close togethr over here, you can literally have two or three farmers fields seperating to large towns, and the inhabitents of each have completly different accents.

St Helens is famous for its industry, its world champion Rugby League team and for sharing its name with a North American volcanoe.

29. Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England
You've got to admit to being (in)famous for Peter Mandelson too.

Beaconsfield is about 20 miles north west of London, the area is delightful combining the rolling Chiltern Hills and charming countryside with good facilities and ease of access to London.

The politics are true blue (which means the opposite of what it means in the U.S.). My M.P. is the Shadow Attorney General, and the Conservatives gained 52.9% of the vote last time round (which was a terribly result for them). In fact the whole county of Buckinghamshire is Conservative, all 5 M.P.s, all 4 District Councils, and the County Council.

Beaconsfield is famous as being the only election Tony Blair has lost, he was the Labour Party candidate at a by-election here in 1982 and came third with 10% of the vote.

138. He was born there
He was born there, and went to school in Edinburgh, but I think his father was involved with Durham University (northern England). He currently represents Sedgefield (which is in Co. Durham).

In England there is a great deal of geographical mobility for politicians; elections are pretty much all about party and many M.P.s do not live in their constituencies. Before getting to fight a safe-seat, it is usual that a prospective M.P. will contest a hopeless case. In Blair's situation round here was always hopeless, but having fought it he could get his current rock-solid Labour seat.

My wife's parents grew up in St. Helens, but never knew each other until they came over here and met in NY.

The only other family name I know of is Anders. I think they live in Rainford area.

218. Rainford is one of the 'posh' areas of town.
There used to be a pair of twins in my primary school class back in the early 90s called Anders but they were from Sutton.

Its so freaky discussing the geography of my little town with someone thousand sof miles away.

223. Is there another part called Rain-Hill too, I think...
That might be where the Anders are from, no that I think about it.

Rainford is where my wife's aunt lives, and I would definitly refer to her "lifestyle" as posh. :)

These are two cousins-in-law (if thare is such a thing)of mine that are Anders. They aren't twins though, but sure could pass as twins.

They would have been a little older than primary school in the early 90's I think. I'll have to double check that with my wife.

Sutton sounds pretty familiar too. I think that's where my father-in-law grew up. His last name was Heyes (pronounced Hayes).

Anyway, cool talking to someone from a thousand miles away. Let me know if these other places sound familar.

224. Rainhill is a place too
and people often confuse it with Rainford even though theyre at opposite ends of the town.

All I can rmeber of the Anders is that in the early 90s there were twins in my class one of whom was called Lee, the other was a girl but her name escapes me. The school was Eaves lane conuty primary if thats any use.

BTW What part of America are you in?

225. It's probably not them then...
I live in New Jersey, the southern part. We're right outside of Philadelphia, about 7 or 8 miles (12km). It's a little town called Maple Shade. Our closest big town is Cherry Hill. I don't know if you've ever heard of it. Cherry Hill is famous for having the first indoor shopping mall in the USA.

I'll have to talk to my father-in-law when we see him on Christmas to see if he remembers any of the places you mentioned. They go back every couple of years to visit, so things are still familiar to them. It will be crazy to tell him I was talking to someone from St. Helens on the "Internet". I don't think he's totally sure what it is still. :)

Let me know if you've heard of us.

Lots of avalanches this past week along the Wasatch ... I still miss the snow and wide open spaces, but I don't particularly miss the LDS influence. Still, here near Atlanta, there's the fundies to deal with - at least the LDS are a charitable bunch.

Great boss - always ran interference for us programmers, but said 'no' to upper management one too many times. He got the axe shortly after I moved to Georgia. He used to go play paint ball with a bunch of my coworkers on weekends and spent a lot of time in Lyman. I wish I had a boss like that, still.

212. It used to be a nice quiet democratic
town, our local paper was titled the
Andrew County Democrat. Then, we started growing in the nineties when everyone had a job and money. The town started turning red, the paper was sold to repiggies, the name changed, price increased, and rat wing commentators installed. I don't even read it anymore, I'm stuck here, my wife's feet are in cement and the only way out of here is without her, I'm not ready for that, yet.
So, I'll keep my head down and hope to hell we survive the coming year.

I am temporarily stuck in the 'burbs south of the river but I love St. Paul! I like it's funky River-town vibe. Reminds me of Winona (wher I lived for 7 awesome years) :)

Where raw sewage and oil from broken oil tankers flows through the waterways, chlorine gas clouds loom in the air, nuclear reactors past their warranty rumble and creak, and former chemical plants sit on soil so polluted that we build 10-foot deep walls around them to contain their creeping death. But it's home, we have two democratic Senators, a Democratic governor and Lt. Gov. and I love it.

My dad was in the Air Force during the Cold War, so we moved around a lot (mostly in Europe).

So that's what I tell people when they ask about my home town.

Since then, I've followed a policy of never staying in the same place more than 3 years, which I've managed to keep up with pretty well (did a 5-year stint in Hong Kong and another of nearly equal length in Alameda, California.)

So now I'm in Romania, but I don't like it that much.

Think I'll move.
