PLEASE don't Legalize Cellphones at 30,000 feet |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 11:59 AM by Jack_Dawson
That was my last bastion of sanity. Peace. Quiet. Tranquility. Now I have to listen to a bunch of self-important fuckwit blowhards participating in teleconferences while I'm trying to watch Shrek 2 or read a book? Some ideas fall under VERY BAD. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/12/15/tech/main661360.shtml

Cell phones will be permitted, but in return passengers are allowed to snatch phones from annoying people and shove them down one of the toilets.

I'm usually sitting next to one trying to get her to stop screaming.
But the cell phone is more easily turned off.

just like it's not a poorly-trained dog's fault if it misbehaves (not equating children to animals; just saying that the kid/child shouldn't be put in that situation in the first place).

Not all kids scream constantly. If the parents don't put up with their shit, then the kid will learn to behave at an early age.

they want to put the tower on the plane, guaranteeing the connection for the whole flight; with hefty roaming charges, of course.

I guess the same in $. Haven't used them on a plane yet, but they do work great in trains. I do not think that they'll really work for people speaking :-( (in fact I know that they're pretty ineffective in blocking chatter).

If cell phones can be used to detonate explosives and the baggage going into the belly of planes is not being checked 100% - I have to ask "what the hell are they thinking?". Unless MIHOP is what happened and all the terror vigilance is unnecessary bullshit.

If someone wanted to blow up a plane with a cellphone, a ban on calling at 30k feet wouldn't stop them.

Just what I wanna hear. I have a cell and the most time I use it is in my car or at home. I rarely use it in public places (except casino's when I'm trying keep an eye on the other half).
On planes? Oh shit! Gruuuurate!
I hope some airlines will adopt an no cell phone policy.

21. Who are the people who actually want this? |
|
I was watching a piece on the news last night and everyone they talked to was horrified by the idea. So who is it that is pushing this? Who thinks it's a good idea? Is it solely those who are going to make money off it? Or are there actually travelers who are saying, "Oh, goody"?
Enquiring minds want to know.

22. It's more of an issue for commuter flights, actually. |
|
Pull up a national coverage map for your cellphone company and you'll notice that there are massive sections of the US that still have no cellphone service, or which still rely on the old analog systems. Most of us never see them because the freeway corridors, towns, and cities that we visit were upgraded long ago to digital service, but most of the US is still pretty backward.
If you had a cellphone ten years ago, think back to the difficulties we all used to have maintaining a clear signal while driving on the ground at 60 miles per hour. Now imagine what it's going to be like trying to maintain a clear signal at 30,000 feet at 550 MPH! And if you're flying over the western deserts, you can forget coverage altogether.
Then there's the problem of modern cellphones...most are capable of digital and analog service, but many models default to Digital Only and few users know how to switch this. These digital service only users will simply lose all signal shortly after takeoff, and will only regain it sporadically during the flight and before landing.

Expensive place, nice and subdued. We were really enjoying ourselves...
except for the fuckwit next to us who kept blathering into his cell phone.
I swear, he spent 30 minutes on the freaking phone!! We cracked up when he left, because after he got off the phone, he started extolling the many virtues of Bush/Cheney. My mother said, "When I saw how rude he was, I just knew he was a Republican!" :D

28. Ha, don't mean to trump your story, but.. |
|
4 months ago I was on a date with a repub and his fucking cell phone rang at least 5 times within an hour. I was at this nice restaurant in Richmond where people were engaged in healthy discussion and it was romantic and quiet. No emergencies, no deaths, he just needed it to feel important. Every time it would ring, he would take it out of his pocket and read to me the name that was calling. Like I gave a shit--like I knew who these people were! After the fifth call, about 15 minutes later when I thought it was all over, I heard this odd vibrating sound that almost sounded like he was pooting, but no, it was his beeper. I have no idea why he had a beeper but that's beside the point. I never went out with him again of course and I hear that he now dates another repub who works for Phillip Morris. Needless to say, I am a cell phone-hater even though I feel the need to own one, but I know when it is appropriate to use one.
Anyway, your mom sounds cool.
