Why they make fun of liberals: Heard the word 'speciesist' on Pacifica |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 01:43 PM by Richardo
the other day.
A very earnest conversation on animal rights, by people who consider every animal, insect etc just as important as human beings.
Used terms like the above 'speciesist' (killing spiders is 'species-ist' behavior); 'non-human animals' (why not just 'animals'?)
It was all SOOOOO uber-correct, I was rolling my eyes and laughing out loud during most of the show. :eyes:

I hope they can remain this pure next time they run into a hungry hammerhead shark or and angry rattlesnake.

2. That is exactly why we lose elections |
|
people start associating us with some of the nut jobs they put on in the media. Pacifica has a notably large number of these people on. I feel like a wingnut half the time I listen to Pacifica.

11. Why don't people associate Conservatives with the "nutcases" in the media? |
|
The list is too long to even start.....? Seriously, why don't they?

22. There is a reason people make these assocations: |
|
Well, two reasons, actually:
(1) the right-wing media consistently promotes the most insane and nonrepresentative people they can find as "the voices of the left".
(2) the real progressives in this country have been FAR too willing to tolerate this kind of association, and have even played into it under the banner of "tolerance".
I think we need to get back to defining ourselves, and part of that process involves drawing some lines again. Zell Miller is not a progressive. Neither is some nutjob who won't step on a bug because it would make him a "speciesist". Movements, like law, are defined at the fringes. We need to start drawing some lines again. At least that way people will know where our hearts and our heads are, for better or for worse.

3. Pacifica caters to a niche audience |
|
Something for everybody, I guess.
And it's not because of "speciest" that people hate liberals -- it's because we're not governed by fear and superstition. Conservatives spit nails over the fact that they can beat us into submission.
Long live Pacifica!!!! Fuck the GOP and conservatives. Spend your time complaining about conservative orgs rather than our friends.

5. Hey I'm in the choir... |
|
...but I said 'speciesist' is why they make fun of us, not why they hate us. And I also find strained political correctness mockable.
That being said, I thank Jebus every day that I'm in a Pacifica market with an honest-to-goodness Pacifica station (KPFT).

I listned when I lived in LA three years ago.
One of my favorite segments was this socioligist or something that called for welfare for lifetime college students. Most brillant idea in the world if you ask me! I would love a professional academic class. I would try to join it. shhh...

That said, yeah, sometimes these arguments aren't couched as clearly as they could be. I say it's all about allowing the rest of "Creation" to exist, along with us.

18. No, but Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists all believe |
|
that, apart from the body, there is no difference between a cow, a dog, a cat, a stick insect and a human being. Therefore they believe that if it is wrong to murder a human then it is equally wrong to kill any other creature unnecessarily.
To address the other poster's point about the shark, this does not take into account self-preservation. It is OK to kill an animal or person that is otherwise going to kill you. The critical point is necessity.

19. I just looked for local affiliates on pacifica.org |
|
They have two columns where they list stations you can listen to them. The list only "East Coast Stations" and "West Coast Stations." That alone says something about why we aren't reaching people in the South and Midwest.
