Marines logo
Saw it on TV during one of their many "We're few, we're proud, we're better than you" adverts which merely say "We want you to do our government's dirty work" and nothing of any real nobility.

Dark metallic gray eagle with its talons deeply entrenched into mother Earth. With N. America being viewable, naturally - amazing how embarrassed they felt when leaving those pus buckets known as South America and Mexico in the pic... There's an anchor going through the planet at an angle which is reminiscent of the United Earth logo used in the Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror"...

But every time I see a military logo or Bush standing in front of a bunch of flags, the eagle represented reminds me of some Nazi logo. Not freedom. Not anymore. Am I alone?

Looked like this, only darker and more sinister looking, partly because it WAS darker:

I am proud to have served in the Marine corps. We have been in service to our country for well over 200 years. Politics and military service do not mix well, you go where you are ordered and complete the mission.

You complain about the military and the nazi's? Who the hell do you think defeated Hitler and his possee?

I am deeply offended, many Marines have fought and died to gain and preserve your rights. The least your sorry ass could do is THINK! Your hatred of Bush should not reflect on the Marine Corps.

By the way- that logo isn't new.

is the RW bastards have twisted and misused the symbols so that what they used to represent has become unrecognizable and frightening.

that's my take anyway.

Who the hell do you think defeated Hitler and his possee?

The Soviet Army -- with an assist from Britain, Free France and the U.S.

21. Yup, they are military forces
My point was, it was military force that defeated Hitler.
The Marine corps had no/limited role in the ETO, but military force by all the allies defeated Hitler.

3. My son is a Marine
currently on active duty in Okinawa. I have one of the Marine Corps logos on my car. I'm proud of my son. He's a liberal Democrat. So am I, my husband, and my son's twin sister. She's the secretary of the Young Democrats at her college. Dislike the military if you want. You're free to express your disdain. Just don't assume that the military is comprised of rightwing robot babykillers. That is unworthy of you and unfair to the thousands of men and women of the military.

4. Gee... that's kind of a stretch.
For a logo that's been around for a long, long time. The eagle? Well, that's American. The anchor? Well, the Marines are (or used to be) a part of the Department of the Navy.

8. Hypno, I think you put your foot in your buccal cavity this time
I, too, am proud to have served with the US Marine Corps. That logo is not new, and has been little changed for nearly 100 years now. The Marine Corps goes where it is told and does what has to be done. Without the Marine Corps, we would have most likely lost the war of 1812, would certainly lost many more men in WWI as the war would have lasted longer without Belleau Wood, defeating Japan in WWII would have been impossible, the line would not have held without the 1stMarDiv in Korea, and during the Tet Offensive only Danang (held by Marines) did not fall in I Corps.

I am a liberal... well, beyond liberal democrat. I was when I was in, and I knew lots of others too. I am sure it is the same today. I feel sorry for the poor bastards who are over there fighting for Halliburton and Oil.

I hope they don't come home as fucked up as I was when I got home from war. But, I know this is a pipe dream.

So, in this ex-Marine Corps-serving Hospital Corpsman's mind, I think you owe the Marine Corps veterans here an apology.

13. The Marines, and the logo
certainly have a long and honoured history, I don't think anyone is denying that. What I see this poster as saying is that this administration is cheapening that history, and corrupting the symbol.

i am not making a straight analogy here, since I don't like comparing anyone to Hitler, but the swastika has had a long and honoured history, one that the association with the evil of the nazi regime has tainted forever. Tell me that you don't squirm a little when you see a swastika on an ancient chinese vase? There are swastikas on the ceilings of many classical goverment buildings. but I bet they were all built before WWII. Think anyone uses this ancient symbol anymore? except to associate themselves with nazism? Can you say with a straight face that the battle flag of the Southern Army can now mean anything except racism and intimidation?

Saying that we 'went where we were told and got the job done' is not an excuse. The same Germans you give the Corps credit for defeating in WWII tried the same excuse, and the system the Corps fought for slapped them down. "just following orders" is not an excuse.

I am not aware of any war crimes commited by my Marine corps during the conflict in Iraq. In fact, they did a spectacular job of driving up the Tigris river and defeating all forces that dared oppose them. I am Damn proud of the way they conducted ground combat operations.
To compare the Marine corps to the Nazi SS is laughable. What war crimes did the Marine corps participate in? Following orders is what the Marine corps is there for. They have a place for Marines that disobey lawful orders- Portsmouth naval prison.

"The same Germans you give the Corps credit for defeating in WWII tried the same excuse, and the system the Corps fought for slapped them down. "just following orders" is not an excuse."

When you can show me war crimes commited by Marines, I will agree with you-

Go ahead and take out your hate of Bush on the Marines if you wish- but your comparison to the Nazi army is Bullcrap.

To all service members- thank you for your service and sacrifice

11. Not Good
I know and have worked with many Marines. You will hard pressed to find nicer, more courteous people. Also, during the Bush cabal's Iraq buildup, I never once heard any of them accuse me or other liberals around them of being unpatriotic. In fact, A few of them expressed their concern to me about the direction the country is headed as well as Dumbya's desire to cut combat pay and benefits to veterans/retirees.

The Bush junta's misuse of the Marine Corps logo should not be reflected on the Marines themselves. Many Vietnam Marines would probably say they see many parallels between their war and what is going on in Iraq today.

14. you are right
the misuse of the logo does not reflect poorly on the Marines, actually, it reflects well on them that folks would want to be associated with the Corps. But not standing up to the misuse over time, that would (not yet, but in the future perhaps) reflect poorly.

26. Well, misuse is a touchy word in this case
Have Marines been misused before? Yes. Haiti, Dominican Republic, Panama, Nicaragua, Philipine Islands, Cambodia, Laos, VietNam, Beiruit, and lots of others I can't think of now.

The point of the spear of the US armed forces always gets shoved in somewhere, and many times the motivations of the civilians who control DOD are suspect at best.

This time is no exception. Of course, the election is questionable, but it is de facto a civilian elected government, and authorized by the US Constitution to give orders to its Military.

Do I think this government is misusing the Marine Corps and for that matter the whole government? Yes.

In the eyes of the law are they? Most likely not.

I fail to see how the ongoing recruiting effort for the armed services misuses their logos.

Can anyone enlighten me?

27. This post is exceptionally offensive
equating the Marines with Nazis is ludicrous in the extreme. I just hope my husband (USMC 69-71, RVN) (not to mention one of the original DU'ers and a hard-core Bush-hater) doesn't see this post. It'll upset him beyond belief, probably get him banned.

Do you even have the faintest idea what you're talking about? Do you know anything whatsoever about the history of the Marine Corps, or their logo?

I'm deeply distressed that this kind of anti-service bigotry is rearing its ugly head. This is not what those who serve their country deserve from the rest of us. One can be a pacifist without animadversions cast upon those who, for reasons of their own, serve in the military. This country would not survive as an independent entity without a military. Now, I don't believe in military worship, or unquestioning obedience to anything or anyone, but it's disingenuous in the extreme to attack the military for their very existence. We are not a peaceful species.

Why the animosity toward a noble service? I don't get it.

30. This is just wrong
I was in the Marines for 8 years, and most of the guys I knew (enlisted not officers) were liberal. I'd say a good 60%.

Also, the most decorated Marine ever had the greatest quote about the military ever:

-- Excerpt from a speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.

I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.

I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.

There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.

It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.

I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service.

I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912.
(where have I heard that name before?) I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.

During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Never a truer statement ever said about US foreign policy.

32. Hypnotoad, I cannot even begin to enumerate the ways in which this is...
one of the most offensive posts I have ever seen on DU.

To be honest, it sounds like you are just reaching for a creative, unique, attention getting post--maybe you envisioned DUers replying, "Oh, what an impressive analysis! You are so correct! The allegories are undeniable!"

Since you haven't posted a response on this thread, I assume you are embarassed and have maybe reconsidered your original post. You should know that DU is composed of many members--many who have marines in their families, or who are marines, or who have dear friends who are marines. I fall into the latter group, and I am patently offended that you can wave your arm over all Marines and make such judgements.

My friend, a Marine who just returned from IRaq, detests Bush and hated the job he was expected to perform. HE IS NOBLE IN MY EYES and I won't let any DUer insult him without a challenge.

In the future, think about the diversity of people here before you make such an inflammatory post. Again, if you have read these responses and feel you erred in your post, you need to apologize to DUers who have made you aware that they are offended.
