a Chapel Hill Pitt Stop bonfire gathering query, or several...
Your host and hostess wish to inquire as to about how many people may be cruising by this way, and about what sort of gathering we should be planning. Will we all be drunk? Nekkid? Giving Will big wet sloppy full-on mouth kisses to be recorded on camera and posted to DU for posterity? Do we need to confiscate keys, or can you weirdos be trusted? How many maps and sets of directions will we need to bring with us to University? How many people will get lost, and end up at the neighbors' houses, with their livers removed, and enjoyed with fava beans and chianti? Is there anybody out there whose tender flesh the mosquitos find tastier than mine? Can you people be trusted with fire? Are any of you allergic to dogs? Who's bringing the chips, dips, chains and whips?

Details, ya know? We must make plans.

4. no-sir-E
we are ON for Friday, assuming anyone desires to show up. If nobody does, we will simply go to the Will Pitt show, where I will rush the stage and deliver his sloppy wet full-on mouth kiss in front of a live audience.

14. thanks Supe!
for the kickaging.

And I share your questions... where is the nclib family? Where is DarkPhenyx? This is looking to be quite the, er, small and intimate gathering thus far...

And THANK YOU for asking about stuff that might be brought. There are several items that would be of use. Numero Uno, if we're gonna be outside, would be the bug spray. Skeeters, ya know? There's also the issue of things to sit on outdoors. Everyone will assuredly bring their own ass, but something upon which to plant said ass would probably be a good thing. The house is new, and the INSIDE is not even fully furnished yet, much less the outside.

There's also the BYOB issue, which I truly hate to do as a host, but as a dirt-ass PO host, I'm afraid I must. At some point, depending on the time and the interest level, we may be able to take up a collection and have someone (raising hand) make an Allen & Son's run for some quality pig, or to the MVF store for some frozen cow juice, or come up with some other food arrangment. There is no delivery of food out here, unless you count the roadkill.

I will aim to keep this hyah thread kicked for a bit today, to hopefully wrangle additional attendees into showing themselves. If not, we'll have the 4 or so of us nekkid around the bonfire, and we'll STILL post the pics in the Lounge to make everyone else jealous. ;-)

Bug spray - Got it! Deep Woods OFF! I never go out without it just b/c of all the ticks.

Chairs - I got a couple of those folding camping chairs, so someone can use one of mine.

BOYB - I'd be willing a couple of six packs of beers/cider.

Allen&Son - MMmm MMMM good. How late do they stay open?

*Checks over shoulder* Yes, I can confirm my ass is genuinely covered. :D

18. I thought AWD was in the Ohio area.
A MERE 6 or so hours, right? Hell, I accidentally strayed into Ohio on my way to Ashland, KY several weeks ago. It's a scenic drive here from there, too, except for having to pay for the privilege of using the friggin' INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM in West Gawddamned Virgina (now officially "the Asshat state" for making me pay interstate tolls  ).

And OF COURSE AWD is invited. EVERYONE'S invited. This includes the Virginny-area folks, too - Underpants and Catpower and the guy with the Mitsu spyder who honked and waved at me South of Richmond when he saw the DU sticker. And the Scurrilinians - you rabble are invited, as well. Undisclosed, Chessy... y'all come on up, hyah? How often do you get to hang out with a famous author, and yer fellow DUers, and play drunkenly with FIRE?!?

32. Map of the relevant portion of UNC campus

Manning Building is sorta between "The Pit(t)" and Playmaker's Theatre. Not that anyone who is not a tarhole will find this information meaningful...

The other big difficulty is gonna be parking. I do not believe there is sufficient parking around Playmaker's to accomodate much of a crowd. And it may be a faculty-only lot, anyway. Best bet may be to park in one of the pay lots off Franklin St. and hoof it to the Old Well, at which you can ask anyone where Manning Building is. And for information's sake, Franklin St. runs parallel to Cameron Ave., and if this map was another 2 inches tall, would be visible running along the top of the screen. Hope this is SOME help, anyway.

35. This map is a great help.
Thanks.

The only time I've been to UNC was for concerts and my brother's graduation which was a long time ago. + I wasn't paying attention.

I did some looking around and the event is set to begin at 7 in room 209. Is that correct?

37. yus - 7p, 209 Manning Bldg.
Dolo Amber and I will aim to be there early, waiting on the front steps and smoking, like good North Carolinians. ;-)

Also, from the map, it looks like there is some parking to be had around Bynum Hall - IIRC that is an admin. bldg. Maybe there will not be the requisite Chapel Hill parking nightmare. We can hope, anyway.

Also, I will print up some directions out to the house in the woods - we may be best off to all just wait for Will to finish his yakkin' and meet up in the parking lot there. This place is NOT easy to find from written directions, or even a map, if I had one. And smoke signals will not be possible until I get here to light the "fahr."

If anyone has any suggestions on this, I'm all ears. Supe - where you at?

40. Has it been moved to Carroll Hall?
I saw a letter in the DTH today that indicated it will be in 111 Carroll Hall.

Carroll Hall is kind of near the Carolina Inn, and real close to Memorial Hall.

There are a couple of good parking options nearby: McCauley St. parking lot, Nash Parking lot (behind Nash Hall on Pittsboro St.), and a few spaces behind Peabody Hall.

34. I do believe, Sir,
that your description is accurate. Finding the house is gonna be tough without some follow-the-leader going on. I live sorta out in the woods, behind a cow pasture and a pond or two. Supe know roughly where it is - it may be that we should all meet up at the MVF store and play follow-the-leader from there. A discussion of logistics is needed.

BTW - how long does your talk run? Are we talking 2 hours? 4 hours? An all-night vocal cord shredding marathon rant? Just trying to figure out how we're gonna work the babysitting thing here while the (supposed) adults are at UNC.

36. My understanding
is that I'll be talking for an hour, answering questions for a half hour, and then signing a few books (provided people actually want to buy any).

7pm-830pm: Talk and q&a
830-930ish: Book signing

So figure we're done at 9:30.

BY THE WAY: They moved the talk to a place across the street from Manning; it's bigger, I guess. People will be at Manning to point the way.

it's the "y'all" finding the house in the woods I worry about. And we will all likely be parked in various places around Chapel Hill. or some other common place after Will's talk would be a good idea. I'm sure we will be parked all over campus. I'm going over there later this afternoon to scout it out. That way SBP could light the way. It's not too far from there, AFAIR.

49. Sorry, I really can't
I have NO IDEA what the mileage is for any of this - only the road names.

I like Supe's idea to hang out a bit post Q&A and signing, and coordinate then. Somebody bring some paper and a writing utensil. We will then play follow-the-leader. Sorry no better direction ability. The mapquest way will get you here just as well, but it's a little roundabout, IMO.
