A great Movie for Democrats on Thursday night |
|
If you know Andy Griffith only as the sheriff of Mayberry or Matlock, see the film A Face in the Crowd for a huge surprise.
Griffith portrays Dusty Rhodes, a sociopathic but charming drifter who is "discovered" by a woman (Patricia Neal) whose father runs a rural radio station. Rhodes quickly becomes the most popular personality on the station, and his fame spreads until he has a national television show. Although he starts out acting like a populist, he morphs into a right-wing demagogue, and conservative bigwigs are ready to support him to "soften up" the American people for a right-wing dictatorship. He has previously ended his romantic involvement with Neal's character by eloping with a teenager (Lee Remick), but that turns out to be a big mistake.
Made in 1958, this is still an amazing film, and it's being shown on Thursday night at 9PM (Central Time) on Turner Classic Movies.

I have long been aware of this film, but have somehow never seen it. I'm too late to catch it tonight, but I'll keep an eye on Turner's rotation to see if it comes up again soon.

and decided the folksy twangy charm would beguile voters even when hapless George poured it on...and he ain't Andy. I so appreciate your posting this...I love the film and find it VERY relevant to the selling of Dubya as a product.
