"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Blows |
|
If there's one Christmas song that makes my skin crawl, it's got to be that one.
In a close second is that damn "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" song.
Bah Humbug!!!

16. Me too, always hated "Chestnuts" |

Judy's version of Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas is wonderful, however.
I REALLY REALLY hate Rockin' Around The Xmas Tree at the Xmas Party Hop...

"A Merry Little Christmas" indeed. Fuck the guy for supposing/ insinuating that my Christmas experience is going to be "small" just because I'm not a big shot Beverly Hills song writer asshole, but instead one of the "little people".

8. If you hear Judy do the original in "Meet Me in St. Louis," |
|
you might not have the same opinion.
For one thing, the lyrics are always changed from
"Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehooooow.."
which fits very well into the story (the family will be moving after Christmas, leaving behind their home and dear friends and family), to the wretched
"Hang a shining star upon the highest boooooooough..."
Without Judy, I can't stand the song, but her version just gets me right there, every time...

12. Frank Sinatra sings the "muddle through" line. |
|
And it does get me, especially being halfway across the country from my parents.
"Some day soon we all will be together, if the the fates allow. Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow....so have yourself a merry little Christmas now..."

Which feels good in some perverse way. Go figure. I like sad songs, I guess.

On the other hand, "We need a little Christmas, right this very minute" gives me the creeps...it's got a sort of amphetamine user desperation about it....
And "The Little Drummer Boy" absolutely disgusts me in every way.

(I think, LOL, don't remember)...anyway, she was having a crappy time, so she decided that her house was celebrating Christmas right at that moment, because they needed some measure of happiness.
I think it's totally out of place anywhere else, and when I hear it, it irks me.

I wanted to sing "We need a little Christmas, right this very minute" right after the last election.

Get the album, A Very Special Christmas, and listen to Chrissie Hynde's version. It is liquid sex. There are several good songs on that album. I like Leon Redbone's Christmas album as well.
