~*~UPDATE~*~ Tried the cold air - nope. While I was doing that, Mr. Cornfield got our ped on the phone. She's going to meet me at the emergency room. (No whooping cough going around, but she still wants to have a look.) Thanks for all the advice.
------
This has been going on for about a few hours now. He's 2 (turns 3 in May) and is coughing and vomiting. (Coughing so hard he ends up vomiting.)
I've tried: prescription cough syrup (codiene) sitting in a steamy room warm tea with honey
None of that seems to be helping. I've got him in the bedroom with a cool mist humidifier now.
Is there anything else I can try to ease this cough before packing up for the emergency room?
Edited to say: Sorry that I posted this here in the "I hate kids" area. The Lounge has more traffic than the parenting forum and I hope it will bring quicker responses as well.

1. Take him outside in the cool air. Bundle him up good and go for a |
|
short walk. This works sometimes with my son. Good luck. I know you must be petrified.

advice for dealing with this.
Mrs. Grumpy's advice is prescribed for croup. Does he sound like a barking seal when he coughs?

4. Does he have 2 pillows propping his head up? |
|
I had bronchitis and I coughed so hard it made me vomit. Resting w/ more than one pillow propping my head up helped with the sinus drainage so it didn't 'choke me up' so much. Just an idea for his comfort level. I hope he feels better; poor baby. :(

6. Calling the dr. is probably the best move. He may need some antibiotics. |
|
Good luck (don't know about the cold air thing; that could make it worse I think).

7. one of my kids used to do that... |
|
...cough till they vomited. Scary.
We normally relied on good old fashioned robitussin to quiet coughs, along with a heatlhy dose of distraction (movies, family friendly video games, etc.).
Honestly, at the couple of hours mark I'd go ahead and pack up for the emergency room. I'd want to make sure it was bronchitis or pneumonia.
Hope your little one feels much better soon.

11. It may be an asthma attack |
|
Most people associate asthma with wheezing, but a cough that won't go away with tradtional treatment can also be a sign.
My oldest (now 9) was diagnosed when he just turned 2. I'd say a trip to the ER is in order, just to be on the safe side. You could call the pediatrician, but they will probably advise the ER.
I hope it eases up your little guy feels better soon.

13. Pertussis was my suspicion. |
|
Call a doctor or emergency room for information. Perhaps your child has been vaccinated for DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis (a.k.a. Whooping Cough), and Tetanus).
I realize you may not have health insurance, but at least make phone calls, and find out if pertussis is in your area.
Good luck.

16. call the dr or take to ER if it persists and try using this herbal rub. |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 09:27 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
Take 4 tablespoons of olive oil and add 2 drops of one or all of the following: eucalyptus, sage, rosemary, and peppermint oil. To ease your child's coughing and soothe his respiratory tract, rub this mixture onto his chest.

well that opinion aside, I'd get that kid to health care. kids that age don't have the resources to keep this sort of thing up. Their electrolytes go off much more quickly than an adults.
The sooner the better. The less that needs to be done to repair what's ailing the little shaver, the better. For him and you.
On Edit-take the drug you gave him in with you.
