Star Trek..Next Generation....loved it or hated it?

I loved this show.

Bonus question: Who was your favorite character? Mine was Data although I kinda liked Q too! :-)

1. I liked Dr. Crusher...
Gates McFadden was always my favorite. Then they brought the "other" doctor on board. But, in the end, the good one came back.

On the other side of reality, I served Michael (Worf) Dorn and Marina (Counselor Troi) Sirtis when they were in town for a convention.

25. The episode where they were linked...
That one and the one where Picard is taken over by an alien force...

They SHOULD have been together darn it!

And I still think Wesley was Picards son.

3. I thought Data's brother (Lor?) was cool, and that the show got
got better when the Borg stepped in. Q was ok but a bit to knowall. Pity they didn't have a Salem Saberhagen-type character instead of Data's cat....

4. Still love it.
I think Data was wonderful, Brent Spiner did an excellent job, but you just can't beat Jean-Luc. Patrick Stewart rocks.

6. Loved the show, loved Worf.
That show was the best of the bunch, IMO (although Voyager was a close second). I still watch the re-runs whenever I can.

9. Best of the Star Trek series...
Data is also my favorite. I had the opportunity to meet him when I worked as an extra on Eudora Welty's "The Ponder Heart". My partner served as his stand-in so they could block things in and get lighting set up. He seemed like a really nice guy...

11. Hated the pilot, but loved seasons 4-7
That pilot was BAD and so were the first couple seasons, but I became a real junkie once it got good. Also used to be heavily into DS9 until they hit the difficult years with lots of Ferengi plot lines and dabo girls a go go. Never got into Voyager.

I think Data was probably the best character, but it was a strong cast and you could do an episode around any one of them and have it come out interesting...something you could not say about Voyager.

There's loads of NextGen stuff at my site, if you're feeling nostalgic:

18. Season Three Hooked Me
I thought they began to hit their stride early into season 3. Don't forget that Best of Both Worlds, Part 1 was the Season 3 cliffhanger.

If that isn't hitting their stride in the 3rd season, i couldn't describe what would be.

14. I did a lot of dumb things in my youth....
Well, I had just turned twenty or so when the first season started, so I don't think my tastes were as tuned in as they are now. That being said, I did like it and I did watch it during the first run.

But, after watching Babylon 5, I started asking myself questions about Star Trek like, "Why do the women on the away team mission always wear high heels and lip stick?"

By the end of the run, I could only look at it as a very slick, live-action comic-book (and don't get me started on the spin-offs....lol)

17. Ummmm! A Slight Flaw In Your Logic
All the central female characters in Bab5 wore make-up all the time too! I like both shows immensely, but if your criticism of STNG was based upon this, then you missed how the Bab5 woman dressed too.

Also, remember, that STNG, even when their were problems with other races were STILL basically explorers not warriors. No such dilemma existed for the Bab5 folks. They were at war and they knew it. They were on a stationary space platform. They weren't explorers at all.

So, the overall premise is so radically different that it's easy to explain how the STNG woman would be a little more concerned about mundane, day in the life, type of things. The men too! Riker playing the trombone? Not during wartime.

19. Well...
Make-up? O-kay. I guess all women do that regardless (a girl-friend I had once brought her make up kit on a camping trip...lol) But I still can't, in good conscious accept justifications for Away-Team members wearng high-heels. It seems almost absurd.

But, it's all subjective opinion. Simply because I think Star trek is a campy show, prioritizing thinly veiled moral preaching doesn't mean that I think everyone else should think that, also. Gads, that would make life boring...lol.

23. I Understand
That was always one of my criticisms of Bab5. And, i liked the show. I thought IT was a little preachy. Although, they did blow more stuff up. You gotta like that.

22. Loved it
But probably my favorite from the series was ol' Gene Roddenberry himself! Here is an excerpt from a fundamentalist website:

Parents, in a loving, but firm manner, teach your children to love the Lord and hate the lies of the world, and then throw all the atheistic "Star Trek" trash out the window! Gene Roddenberry, the creator of "Star Trek" has illustrated in his very life, the historical movement from humanism to pantheism. Having rejected Jesus Christ in a Baptist church as "largely nonsense", Roddenberry became a devout humanist. Like modern man in general, he finally ended up a devout pagan. The following are a few quotes that document his pantheism:

"It was at Denver that someone wrote a question 'What is your religion?' My answer was: 'I do not belong to any church but I do consider myself a religious man. I believe that I am a part of you and you are a part of me and we are a part of all life... also a part of the creative force and intelligence behind life."

a superfantastic quasi-villain if ever there was one. And the holodeck Moriarty - quality stuff.

TNG remains the ONLY Star Trek series I can bear to sit through.

29. Loved it
Season 1 was deplorable but, exactly the opposite of TOS, it got so much better. Captain Picard was without doubt my very favorite. He brought such an understated authority to the role. I liked the calm way he made tough decisions. Best Enterprise Captain EVAR!

I found the Q-Episodes tiresome. Except for Q-Who. That was my very favorite episode.
