My TV clicks on, then clicks off. Any ideas? |
|
I have a 27-inch Zenith made in 1991 that has worked flawlessly for 13 years. Now when I hit the power button, it clicks on then clicks off immediately. It's been doing this for a few days. After several attempts it will stay on but not this morning. I haven't a clue about what the problem could be. Any leads would be welcome.

2. Change the batteries in your remote.............. |
|
seriously. I had the same problem a few weeks ago. It was driving me crazy. I thought the remote itself was broken, but I tried new batteries and ......voila....problem solved. It worked for me anyway.

4. It happens both with the remote and the set's own power button |
|
But I'll remove the batteries and try the set power button again.
*later*
That worked! Either a coincidence or the dying batteries were sending a shutdown message to the set. (?)

8. You should try to Blow out the dust on the circuit boards inside.. |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 11:52 AM by sam sarrha
unplug the unit remove the back and get a can or two of 'dust off' at any electronics section ..even wallmart, *radio shack.. if you dont have a compressor handy. the dust will conduct static electricity and short out the board.. good units have a breaker built in to keep it form catching on fire from shorts.. hit it with some anti-static spray if you have any handy after the dust off. the static in the unit attracts dust. i blow mine out every year...along with the condencer coils under the frig and freezer.. uses less power, doesnt run as much.
good luck.

I suspected a static problem because it's been really cold lately and the air has been very dry. For a few days, flipping a switch in the back seemed to work. I thought it was a degaussing switch but on closer inspection it was the internal/external speaker switch. Once I discovered that it stopped working. I was probably just removing the static charge by touching that part of the set. Also, the click-off does sound like a tripped breaker.

9. Same thing happened to us with our 17 year old TV... |
|
We had to take it to a TV mechanic, and found out it would cost us more to fix it than to just buy a new TV :(
Something like one of the tubes was broken, but it sounds like the same problem we had. Clicks on, clicks off.

But if it is, maybe I can get one of those plasma TVs that last 27 years, like the ones Queensbury High School is buying. ;-)

Yeah, but those are for "educational purposes"... apparantly some movies that you need to learn are just unplayable on regular TVs. ;)

Yeah, I know that's not it but it was the first thing I thought of. My cat is always fooling with the electronics.

Happens all the time. Probably jumped over from your computer. A repair guy can probably exorcise it for $25-50 bucks. Or you can junk it.
I've been selling used TVs for years.
