Poll question: Are you a latte-drinking Volvo-driving NPR-listening etc. liberal? |
|
The complete question: Are you a latte-drinking Volvo-driving NPR-listening Birkenstock-wearing New York Times-reading tofu-eating liberal?
Much of this, according to a Google search, turned up in a Club for Growth anti-Dean ad run in Iowa, though they're just the same old cliches people have been throwing around for years. No attack on liberals implied here (ie from me), though I had to throw in tofu-eating so I'd have something to vote for.

I drive an Isuzu pick up truck. I've never had a latte and I rarely even drink regular coffee. I listen to my local hard rock station. I don't read any newspapers let alone the New York times. I've never had tofu. I wear BVD t-shirts, Levi jeans and generic tennis shoes.
I smoke cigarettes, eat meat, drive an 18 wheeler for a living and shop at Wal-mart occasionally. I'm basically a regular joe.

36. Define "American car". |
|
My old Honda was built in the USA, and there are Chryslers, Fords and GM vehicles built in Canada and Mexico.
However, when one buys ANY car, they buy it from an American dealer and pay American taxes. When it needs repair, they pay American mechanics and buy parts from American dealers.

At least as of 10 years ago, it was a rare instance of GM doing something right. Real union-management cooperation, real worker contributions to all levels of design and construction. The general consensus was that the result, however, was generally pretty uninspired knockoffs of 5-year-old Japanese designs. Things may have changed since 1993 of course, but to be honest, I don't think anybody is rushing to imitate Opel. GM already tried that once when they quit selling German-made Opels in the US and instead marketed Isuzus as Opel Isuzus. I don't think this ended well.

I have been known to enjoy tofu a time or two..
I wear Birkies as well as Eccos and Doc Martens.

tofu-eating Not a big tofu eater, though I am a semi vegetarian who avoids beef, pork and pretty much anything that walks on four feet. Had to start eating turkey and chicken for health reasons, but most meals are still without meat.

Right-wingers tend to have conservative fashion style, do they not? Conservative, as in, a couple of years behind. Or conservative, as in, dressing to please the senior citizens. By those definitions, I don't dress conservatively.
Oh yes, black coffee (whole-bean) or cappucinos (lattes are too milky). Master's degree--why do right wingers scoff at education? I enjoyed my trip to Europe.

And I eat soy products (I'm munching on some soy breakfast sausage right now), but I don't really eat tofu specifically. NPR has become too rah-rah-Bush for me, so I don't listen. I wear hiking boots, not birkenstocks. I drive a Honda and I've never read the NYT.

|
I drive a VW and wear work boots most days. My mom did drive a Volvo when I was little, so I guess some of that is left. The real question is what is wrong with enjoying a good beverage, safe car, comfortable shoes, healthy food and good information, and possibly defining those differently than some other Americans do.

Used to listen to NPR until I started hearing WALMART commercials on it. VW Jetta driving, Diet Coke drinking, atheist, feminist, bisexual, pro-choice, vegetarian, single parent liberal here.
I listen to mostly metal, hiphop and alternative.
And yes, I DO scare conservatives after they find out the above.

I'm a vegan, no less. I don't drive - I take public transportation. And I don't wear Birkies because I don't wear leather. I read NYT and other news online to save paper. I don't listen to NPR - I listen to other independent radio webcasts online though. I'm so liberal it hurts....

Latte is not coffee, and only a 'girlyman' would pretend that it is. Anything with more milk in it that an espresso is just an attempt to make milk-shakes into something for grown-ups. Coffee should look, small and taste like freshly laid road-tar.
On the other hand, as an Englishman I drink tea, and even worse in the right's eyes I drink green-tea (that's probably halfway to paganism). I also eat real cheese and drink French wine by the bucket load.
Oh, and I have an M.A. (Hons.). I've never understood the American right-wing's dislike of education, do they really think that university's are like re-education camps? The British right-wing fortunately escapes this anti-intellectualism.

but that's mainly due to the high level of quality programming on our local NPR station. No classical music. great line up of shows on the weekend, lots of world and indie folk on the weekdays. Unfortunately, it usually gets turned off by the people with lesser-evolved musical tastes in our office.
Coffee: black.
Car: Toyota Corolla
Birkenstocks: nope. New Balance sneakers or Timberland steel toe hikers
NYT: I only read the free weeklies.
Tofu: when someone else cooks it.

106. I got so sick of tofu in the seventies that I can barely stand |
|
to look at it now. Beans, rice, tofu, Nori...
We had a fifty pound bag of brown rice from the co-op (a real co-op--none of this elitist, high-priced Whole Foods or Alfalfa's BS)--when it ran out, we bought another bag...and so on. I ate rice with beans, onions, and garlic; rice with curry; rice in veggie broth; rice for three meals a day (except for the occasional tofu or ramen--which was nothing like the ramen of today). I used to cook the stuff in the pressure cooker with veggies and carrots and beans and stuff.
I ate so much rice in Iowa City that one day I took a bite and literally gagged. B-)
It was years before I could eat rice again.

tofu OK but not required, Times is better than the local paper. Now Birkestocks just don appeal to me, and while NPR is sometimes alright, does it really belong in the Club's crappy list of presumptively liberal pretensions? That as a long time ago, before the canonization of Reagan, which didn't get much criticism from NPR.
