Pet Crisis....................
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 10:01 PM by Darth_Kitten
What an evening. :( Put Murphee my cockatiel into her cage after a little outing outside her cage. I go check on her a couple of minutes later and omigod, her beak is bloody!

I got her out of the cage, and her left wing was bloody on the ends!!! I'm freaking out, that's my little baby there. I call the vet, it sounds like a blood feather. Ohmigod, what do I do?? (I'm so panicked) she explains about pulling the blood feather out, cornstart, etc.

The blood had clotted and Murphee didn't seem TOO concerned about things. I however am still freaking out.

Long story short I found the blood feather, it was a new feather growing out of her left wing. (I found it on the sofa!!) I'm monitoring Murphee just to see that there is no more blood, because I would have to take her into emergency, but it seems that the situation has stablized for now.

I changed the blood stained paper in her cage to monitor for any new blood. I cleaned off her eggs and unfortunately broke one of them. :(

I was so freaked out, seeing blood and knowing birds cannot lose much.

Murphee is crunching away at a snack. :) I love that little creature and couldn't bear to lose her. Sweetest little thing.

1. If the bird's not freaking out, you prolly don't need to, either.
Nice catch, though, to take care if it before it got to be a vet emergency kind of thing. ;-)

The blood totally freaked me out.

I've had many pets, but seeing blood on them just breaks my heart.

Murphee is eating so she must be fine. :) That bird can sure pack away the food! :)

14. Thanks---I'll check the gallery-- I never had a bird but my grandmother
had a canary called Petey. I am 72 and still remember that little canary from when I was a little girl. Astonishing, isn't it?

My kids had gerbils and guinea pigs and we all cried when they died.

I also have had dogs and the one I have now is almost 13 and I keep telling her "We are growing old together, old girl" She is the love of my life.

Good luck with Murphee.

4. That happened with ours.
She got better! Didn't seem to bother her at all, in fact. I'm sure she'll be OK. :)

12. I found a site that explains it
"Blood" feathers are immature feathers that still have a blood supply to the shaft. You can spot them by the dark- colored shaft, as opposed to the white or clear shaft of a mature feather. Also, they will usually be shorter than surrounding feathers and not completely "spread out." If you cut one or it breaks, it will bleed profusely and not really heal, so over a period of days as the feather constantly gets knocked around and moved, it will bleed again and again, and the bird can actually die of blood loss.

Sorry about your baby, Darth Kitten, but I'm happy that it sounds like she's gonna be OK

9. Ah, yes, I remember Buster's first blood feather
I hauled him to the emergency vet, paid some insane fee, and now I just do it myself. He rarely gets them now. He has a specific squak for those, so when I hear it, I go and remove it for him so he doesn't splatter blood all over everything.

I know how you feel. I thought he was dying the first time I saw that. Totally freaked me out.

11. So it's good sign that blood did clot very quickly....
and she doesn't seem so distressed.

I just need reassurance. Trying to chill. :)

Thanks everybody, I needed to vent. :)

10. You need a hug

Blood on pet children tends to freak one out. I freaked out one time over my Cat when she had blood on her face. I immediately took her to the Vet and he couldn't find anything wrong with her. I found out later that we had mice and she had been catching them all along :scared:

Your baby will be alright

13. Bird owners need to have Kwik-Stop, styptic powder on hand for emergencies
It says it is for birds, cats and dogs.
I have it for my bird in case of blood feathers.
It is cheap, ask your vet for some.
Glad your baby is okay.
