I love New York...
God Bless all those DUers who have the fortune to live in the greatest city in the world. I just got back from a day in the city, and while I am always physically tired after a trip there, I always return home completely exhilarated. It's just a great place to be and if the weather isn't too bad on Monday I will be going back with my mom!

1. "New York is a Fun City"
That was the PR motto for NYC under that great mayor, Lindsay. I lived in NYC when it was "down" and rejected by the rest of the country, the "bankruptcy" under the ineffectual Abe Beam ("I know where the buck is") and for 8 years after. Even when it struggled financially, it was a fantastic place filled with bright, funny, extremely friendly people. Nothing like it in the whole world. IT IS THE BEST

5. He was one of the last true LIBERAL Republicans.
He expanded the NYC social welfare system and showed great personal courage during the race riots of the 60's. When everyone thought Harlem was going to "go up" in a big way, Lindsay took his coat off, teamed up with some prominent blacks who supported him and walked the streets of Harlem talking to people and helping to defuse the situation. NYC did not have a race riot and he is credited with great personal courage in his effort to let people know he was the mayor of all the people. He got 40-50% of the black votes in his campaigns for congress and mayor and created many of the social welfare programs that allowed NY to survive and evolve into a vital city. Of course, Ed Koch ruined New York's social services and he's a Democrat. Lindsay was astute a guy and very charismatic. There were really liberal Republicans at that time.

9. Percy Sutton sent his limousine to rescue Lindsay.
But that doesn't change the fact that Lindsay showed great courage.

10. Percy Sutton was another great guy. I didn't know that. Thanks
Can you imagine any Republican today willing to do what Lindsay did? (Rhetorical ?).

12. The question may have been rhetorical,
but the answer is no, and the question made me laugh. Thanks.

2. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.
The bad news is that it should be snowing on Monday, and the morning temperature will be 22 degrees. The snow is expected to start Sunday night.

Not great weather, so I don't know if that will interfere with your return. If it does, visit us some other time. :hi:

3. It wouldn't bother me...
but my mom isn't a fan of the cold...personally I would love to walk through a snow covered central park.

8. Have you seen photographs from 1947?
A friend of mine had some beautiful pictures. He lived in the 70s between Madison and Fifth Avenues, so was right near the park.

I couldn't find a picture of the 1947 snow, so here is the 1888 blizzard on 11th Street, looking west from Waverly Place:

6. Me too! Born in Manhattan...
lived in Queens and moved out to the Island. I miss it. Wish I could go with you - I'm stuck in paradise=Florida. You can only drink so many margaritas before you realize the governor smells funny.
