Foods You Love That You Can't Get Where You're Living Now
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 10:40 AM by CO Liberal
I grew up in New Jersey, and one of my all-time favorites was Taylor Ham, which is made in Trenton. It's a pork roll, that you slice up and fry to have with eggs or on a sandwich:

Another favorite of mine was always Drake's Cakes, particularly their Ring Dings and Coffee Cakes:

How about you? What do YOU miss from "back home"???

1. Key Lime pie
I live 'back home' and wish I could get it more often here. It is available but pretty expensive :) And it's frozen, not fresh.

They're actually the little Mexican limes. Easily available in Texas--don't know about up north.

as she could get into her bags with her when she came to KY to visit from Connecticut; also selfrising white cornmeal and great Northern beans.

She is also very adept at smuggling barbecue

3. Mr. Pibb
They don't sell this in the New England area, everyone says it's the same thing as Dr. Pepper, but I've noticed a differance...

I'm a Pepper BTW

Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?

8. Give Me Dr Pepper (the real stuff) Any Day
Last September, we visited the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco, TX. An exhibit there said that Mr. Pibb was originally called "Dr. Pibb", but they sued to force Coca Cola to change the name.

http://www.drpeppermuseum.com/

BTW, you can still buy Dr Pepper in Texas that's made with REAL SUGAR, instead of corn sweetener. It's pricey (four bucks for a six-pack of 8-ounce bottles), but worth it.

5. Pasties
They were introduced in Minnesota by Cornish immigrants who came to work in the mines.

Pasties are meat and veggies (usually pork, potatoes and rutabagas) baked inside a dough.

The wives would bake them in the morning and bring them still warm to their hubbies at noon when they climbed out of the hole for lunch.

Still a tradition up north.

I love em smothered in ketsup. Here's a recipe:

http://www.geocities.com/lukefisk.geo/pasty.html

Don't forget the rutabaga! It's the secret ingredient. Some of the miners used to warm these in the morning, wrap them and then stuff them inside of their clothing to keep them warm until lunch time.
I preferred to eat them at the picnic table at Grandma and Grandpa's house in Iron Mountain.

For every food I miss from back home, there are about three amazing culinary discoveries I have made to make up for the "home foods".

I recently found a little bodega with a tiny kitchen in the back that makes the BEST tamales and tortas I've ever encountered. That sort of thing makes it all worthwhile.

90. Unfortunately, most of the crabs here are no longer from the bay
Most of the ones we get here now are shipped in from Louisiana. I do have a friend who regularly goes crabbing in Bay Ridge (near Annapolis) during the summer months who usually gets some really good blues.

But the bay isn't stocked like it used to be. Too many crabs were taken too fast.

BTW---it is Old Bay, not Phillips seasoning that is the distinctive taste of MD Blue Crabs.

Fresh caught from a local rice pond/bayou.

Said oysters raw tasting of the Gulf.
Real French bread.
Those same Gulf oysters fried in Po-boys made from real French bread.
A sloppy N'Awlins roast beef au ju Po-boy.
Fresh sweet corn.
Texas bar-b-que.
Texas chili.
Dirty rice with oysters.
Pecan logs.
Roasted cajun-spiced pecans fresh out the shell.
Seafood gumbo with mama's rue.
Zapps Cajun Crawtator potato chips.
Abita beer.

Once I tried buying crawfish in upstate new york. BIG MISTAKE!
Gah! Tell me about it.
I bought some at a "crawfish boil" here in Raleigh at the farmers market once... they used *black pepper* and nothing else to boil them!

27. As close as I am to NYC, the one thing I cannot get -- 35 miles away, is..
A decent Kaiser Roll!

In NYC, they understand how to make these. They are a combination of crisp, soft, and chewy all in one roll. You could just butter one and call it breakfast. Skip the butter, pile on sliced ham and slather with mustard, and it was a great lunch.

In NJ...they're just Soft...all over. Yuck. They don't work with the butter...they don't work with the ham, either. Ugh.

The bakeries in NYC use brick ovens, and the humidity in teh air gives the bread and rolls that great crust.

Not out here....

One day we were in a supermarket in Henderson, NV and saw a display of "HARD ROLLS". I picked up a bag, and they were squishy like sponges.

They're all squishy now! There is one little Italian Supermarket near me that has good Kaiser Rolls- no one else does. I love a lightly buttered Kaiser for Breakfast with a nice cup of coffee.

And the ongoing debate was which one was best. I grew up outside Morristown, and the debate was between Pete's on Morris St, Tony's on Pine St, and Verilli's on Martin Luthur King Ave. (Verilli's was a bakery that also made good pizza - that also sold the crusts, sauce, & cheese so you could make your own at home.)

72. Okay, believe it or not, it's in Utah
DH's former employer was based in Utah, so we have both been there, and we have eaten at The Sconecutter. Now, I realize that those who pride themselves on fine dining would never want to spend any time there at all (I have never seen so many chain restaurants in one state,) but The Sconecutter is local. They make the best avocado cheeseburger I have ever had. It's even delicious on a whole-wheat scone. They also make amazing onion straws.

I could go for one right now.

Born and raised there; moved to Idaho four years ago at the age of 34.

All of my family but one sister is still there, and my husband and I plan to move back as soon as possible. My daughter graduates high school this spring, and my other daughter starts school next fall, so next summer would be ideal - if we can swing the job situation.

fresh milk from the cow on my aunt's farm and all the homemade dairy stuff she made with it

the Tastee Treet Drive in in Russellville KY, best loose meat burger and best soft serve ice cream EVER

from Boston/Cambridge I miss those wonderful sub sandwiches from the little place near the Harvard Law School side of campus, just off Mass AVE
the excellent floppy, oily pizza readily available everywhere up there

the butterfly shrimp that apparantly only chinese restaurants in Boston know how to make: fresh, and cut to look like a big handlebar moustache
then flash fried in tempura style batter.

From Evansville IN, I miss Jaya's KOrean restaurant and all the wild stuff they think of to drop in a deep fryer at the Fall Festival

The thing I miss: Spinach & artichoke pizza. Every pizza place in New Orleans serves it, but I've never seen it anywhere else in the country. :(

the holiday weekend

hubby really likes the cotlets best, so that way I can make what he likes and save a bunch of $$$ too.

the recipe looks plenty easy too

Chinese restaurants in New York have this as an appetizer. For some it's a meal in itself. I think peanuts are in there somewhere. I have rarely seen it outside New York. Once in Florida, but they didn't do it very well.

175. Depending on where you live in Indiana, there are TastyKakes in Chicago
http://www.phillysbest.com/
http://www.phillysbest.com/menu.html

The links above are for a place called Philly's Best. They make a mean chessesteak and sell TastyKakes. The guy that runs the place is a Philly transplant to Chicago. My dad grew up in Philly, but now lives in the Midwest. He still lives a couple of hours from Chicago, but I go to school in the city. Whenever he comes down, he buys a bunch of TastyKakes from Philly's Best. He says the chessesteaks aren't 100% authentic, but they are wonderful nevertheless. They have a place in the suburbs and in the city. Both are good and are in good areas. It would be a great surprise to give to your husband for a birthday, anniversary weekend getaway, etc. That is planning a trip to Chicago to do some of the many wonderful things our city offers and then going to Philly's Best of course.

Rye Bread from Golden Grain Bakery - Sudbury
Any ethnic food of any description
Rostii - Movenpik in Toronto had great ones
Chicken and Potato Roti - Carribean's on Yonge Street, Toronto

Damn! Now I'm salivating.

Ok, Santa Barbara doesn't have a Hot Dog on a Stick and I love cheese on a stick. Umm, there's one Salvadoran restaurant in the city but they pissed me off because they didn't have bean and cheese pupusas, something I've never been denied at a Salvadoran restaurant. Apparently, the cook wasn't able to keep the beans inside. So lame.

If a hoagie isn't on a Amoroso roll it's not a real hoagie/sub/whatever.

Here in California they put all sorts of weird shit on pizza...it's OK but give me a good cheesy philly pizza- or maybe Grottos from Rehoboth - and I'm happy!

and there are a few stores here that carry tastykakes but they aren't near me!!!

I haven't been able to find really good pork chile like what I had growing up. It was more of a brownish gravy that was hot and spicy with chunks of slow cooked pork. It usually topped a cheese enchilada.
Yummmm.

I just saw them do a thing about the Taylor ham on the food network not to long ago.

But don't get them at the restaurant on I-10 in Chiriaco Summit, California, wait until you get to Cabazon, California and stop at Hadley's, they are much better there.

158. Pure Vermont maple syrup
Here in California, all I've been able to find is syrup made in Canada. No offense to Canada, but I prefer to support the Vermont maple growers of my home state. So I get it mail order from one of the farms in my home town. A gallon can lasts me 5 or 6 months (I put maple syrup in everything I cook, just about).

182. "This is a song about living in Pasadena & commuting to Beaumont"
That's how Townes van Zandt used to introduce a tune occasionally. Usually with lyrics of extreme darkness & depression--he wrote several of those. But he did have an odd sense of humor--& spent much of his youth on the Gulf Coast.

(Since I've lived in Texas most of my life, I can't say that I "miss" any food. But I have some longings for good Italian food & fried clams. We've got good upscale Italian food in Houston but not the same neighborhood traditions. And all the clams are frozen.)
