Are there still folks who believe the earth is flat?
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 10:59 AM by dolo amber
I mean, people believe in some stuff I'd consider just as unenlightened/science-denying, so it wouldn't surprise me...

Edited to change round to flat, as I clearly need more coffee...:D

1. Common Sense is what tells you the world is flat.
Just look around and believe the evidence of your own eyes!

I don't see any.

4. In the interest of avoiding a flamefest
I don't think examples are necessary...I'm sure they're pretty obvious anyway. :hi:

5. I see no denial of science
Myself, I believe in evolution just for example. I consider it part of God's plan. I don't see any conflict at all.

6. Do you deny that there is such a thing as a sunrise?
If you want to play the radical Copernican, I will play the inquistitor's advocate.

9. Are there still people who believe Columbus disproved that?
In fact, every educated person in the west has known that the earth was spherical since the time of the ancient Greeks. It was Aristarchus, if I recall correctly, who calculated the earth's diamter, to within a few percent. Greek astronomical knowledge was summarized by Ptolemy, in a book that was preserved by the Muslims as the Almagest, and that became the most widely distributed science text in Europe during the middle ages. Latitude navigation, practice for millenia, relies on the sphericity of the earth.

When Columbus came around, every educated westerner knew the earth was a sphere. The argument over a western passage to the Indies had to do with its diameter. Christopher thought the earth's diameter was smaller than it is, and that Asia was longer, and that a western passage to the Indies was shorter than it actually is. To his dying day, Columbus did not believe he had found a new continent, but just the eastern edge of Asia. It was the paradigmatic example of succeeding by being wrong. :)

The closer to the equator the flatter they think the earth is.

13. Actually, the Flat Earth Society still exists.
Membership numbers are not "up," but true believers hang on, desperately. If they didn't hang on, they'd fall off the surface.
