The mama hummingbird from the spring reclaimed her nest on my patio
and laid two more eggs! She raised two, and they flew away in July.

This is the new clutch, laid yesterday; we'll see the babies in about 3 weeks.

5. I'm in CA too, but the hummingbirds here (Silicon Valley) vanished...
I have a large feeder on my patio, and they were draining it every 2-3 days. Then, when the weather changed, adios amigos...but they certainly are cool to watch when they're around!

:toast:

6. Wow, that is cool
I like the mirror on the boom that you have there. Are they Ruby throated hummingbirds?

8. They're so tiny!
Once I saw a tiny little buzzy thing, thought it was a huge bug or something...videotaped it....it kept hovering by the flowers, so we thought it might have been a hummingbird, and it was. Very tiny, little wings moving quite quickly.

Uh, unless that wasn't a hummingbird, in which case.....sigh.

9. Scale?
Is that really tiny? How big is the mirror? Nickle sized? Quarter sized?

10. That mirror is 3 inches in diameter, and the nest is anchored to a chain

by hummingbird spit (I guess :P ) and it's made mostly of dryer lint. :D

I noticed it first last May and it's been empty since July. I'm so delighted she came back, I feel like she trusts me.

She was here 5 - 7 days before the egss were laid (yesterday). It's even built up a little bit more at the top than it was last year.

Each chain link is 1 1/2 in. long and 1 in. wide, so basically the nest in 3 in. long and 1 1/2 in. wide.

They're on top of a hanging plant I try not to disturb, but bless their hearts, they're 6 feet from my front door at the end of the alcove and no matter how quiet I am, I always startle her and she flies away for a minute.

I have lots of pics from the first two babies. They flew away in July. Here's the last pic I got of them before they fledged.
