located around the Danube River. When the Huns hit Europe in the 300's, they were forced west to stay away from them. That squeezed them to the Roman border.
For a while it worked out okay. The Romans made a treaty with them allowing them within the Roman borders. For the Romans, the Visigoths were a buffer from the Huns. The Goths were helped by Roman armies when the Huns pressed in.
Many Visigoth warriors actually entered the Roman armed forces and Visigoth families settled in northern Italy.
The two alliesw never were able to work out a deal which permanently settled the Visigoths anywhere though, and when the Visigoth king died, his sons cancelled the alliance with Rome.
That brought on at least three Visigoth invasions of Rome. The first two were beaten back. The Visigoths claimed they did not want to fight Rome but had to have a steady stream of supplies and land. The Romans wanted them out of the empire as they were seen as weakening it from within.
On the third invasion the Visigoths were able to sack Rome which they did for over three days burning and looting.
The Roman Empire never recovered from this defeat and was soon gone.
The Visigoths were still a people trying to find land, and being attacked from all sides. They eventually were able to set up a Visigoth Empire by chopping off the Roman provinces that are now Spain and Portugal and settling thre and in Northern Africa.
How's that for a very brief history.
