Went to see Polar Express - it was wonderful. |

Actually, it is just a truely amazing movie. The special effects are just breathtaking.
Tom Hanks did it again.

1. I don't really like Tom Hanks |
|
but I loved the Polar Express. I took my son to see it a couple of weeks ago, just shy of his second birthday. It was his very first time in a theater and I was a little worried about how he would behave. No need, though. He sat there transfixed through the entire film until about the last five minutes when he turned to me and told me he needed a new diaper. He was just wet, though, so I was a bad dad and didn't take him out until the end of the movie. He didn't seem to mind, though. He watched the movie and didn't make another peep until it was over.
That was a great evening.

They did a spectacular job with computer animation bringing the Caldecott winning art-work to the screen. The hybrid people were creepy. They did ok with the story; added a lot of stuff to make it movie length. Some of the stuff, like the stories of some of the other kids on the train, was good. Some were obviously added for commercial purpose/effect; I was less than impressed with those. (The roller-coaster train ride, for example). If the story is strong, why do you have to add adrenaline where it's not necessary? And the addition of one mysterious character, sort of a cameo addition, intrigued me, but left me wondering: why?

6. I have never read the book. |

But I loved the roller coaster stuff. And that part in the mountains with the wolves and the eagle.
\I just loved the whole thing. I thought that animation was just amazing. My friend with me had not wanted to go. She just sat their amazed and also thought it was wonderful.
Did you notice the poor boy's hair blowing in the wind? Amazing.

9. THE CARIBOU and the REINDEER blew me away!!!! I LOVED the elves |
|
holding the reindeer en harness so they wouldn't float away!!!
And when Santa came out, it reminded me SO much of Close Encounters of a Third Kind, at the end, when the aliens came out from the ship...
SUCH an evocative movie.. I JUST LOVED it.
Okay, now I want to see it again!!!!

...maybe because it wasn't a critical darling, my expectations weren't too high either. But visually stunning and a sweet story. Here's the trailer: http://polarexpressmovie.warnerbros.com/media_trailer.html

...almost 5, and he LOVED it! My wife and I would have loved it if we had gone to see it ourselves, too!
In the middle of the movie my son had to go pee, and I almost laughed out loud seeing him run his little rump to & from the bathroom so he would miss as little as possible!
Nerts to the critics! It was a great movie!
