1. Johnny Cash Was Not Stereotypical Left Wing |
|
but he was strongly anti-authority and stood in solidarity with the dispossessed. To me, that qualifies him.

5. Bonnie Raitt is country now? Well, shut my mouth. |
|
I had to go with Willie. What a songwriter.

22. If Bonnie is country, |
|
it is the strangest sounding country I have ever heard. I guess her one huge hit, written by Mike Reid, an actual country songwriter, puts her now and forever in this pigeonhole. Her albums prior to that breakthrough period were a mixture of blues, rock, folk, and even countryish songs, but hell, I LIKE eclecticism. And good singing.
But, to get on topic again, I have say Steve Earle, whose talent survived rehab.

27. She does several genres |
|
Some people would call modern country a mixture of blues, rock and folk. I think it's fair to say she has done country, even though most of her music doesn't fit into one category.

Pretty slim case. He likes Big Dog (himself no liberal) and he's friends with Kid Schlock. Sounds like he is, though, but can't admit to it for business reasons.

15. Tim McGraw "I miss back when" |
|
Back when a hoe was a hoe Coke was a coke And crack's what you were doing When you were cracking jokes Back when a screw was a screw The wind was all that blew And when you said I'm down with that Well it meant you had the flu I miss back when I miss back when I miss back when
Again, I must point out that a hoe is in fact still a hoe...the proper spelling of the slang is "ho". Regardless...don't sound so leftie to me.

I miss all that, too!
But Tim McGraw is probably a fairly moderate Dem, anyway.

32. That's not at all what I said/meant |
|
That is merely an aside. I was just pointing out that those lyrics don't sound so *progressive*...smacks a bit of "I miss when certain elements of society knew their place", if you will. Maybe it's just me.

Her name should be on that poll instead of Bonnie's (love her, but she's NOT a country artist).
Check out her website--she writes regular "columns" which frequently talk politics. She's a hardcore, Bush-hating lefty. My kinda woman.

Only three votes for Lucinda Williams? Too bad!
Not only is she one of the greatest songwriters going these days, she makes my kids run screaming from the room whenever I pop in one of her CD's. What could be better?
