Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 05:39 PM by masmdu
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/quake_prediction_030915.html"A Japanese researcher is causing a stir in Tokyo with a prediction based on his study of radio waves that a major destructive earthquake is highly likely to hit the city this week. " - Sept. 15 "His theory: as pressure builds in the Earth's crust before an earthquake, tiny cracks and magma movements can affect charged particles in the atmosphere, and the resulting electromagnetic changes can be picked up by radio receivers. over his/her entire career. A broken clock is right twice a day, they say.

... but his record since he discovered his method of predicting quakes ain't too shabby:
---clip--
From January 1997 to September 1999, using these patterns, Kushida predicted specific dates, strengths and locations of the focus of 36 major earthquakes measuring a magnitude of 5 or stronger.
The average margin of error in the dates predicted was 1.97 days.
(from the second link)

I was in Tokyo for the 5.5 quake last saturday, and it kind of freaked me out then because I came upon Kushida's predictions a couple of days before. When I mentioned it to my Japanese friend, he said "Oh, we hear about these crackpots trying to predict earthquakes all the time" and didn't even want to hear about it. Said "they're never even close"...
After that quake and now this 8.0 in Hokkaido, my friend may be changing his tune.
