rightwing push it, yes. After all, GWBush allegedly put down the bottle, but took up "religion" as a substitute addiction. And we all suffer the consequences thereof. What the hell OTHER president have we had that spoke to God and heard God, that unquestionably ventures forth w/ that crap in his head. No wonder GWBush doesn't waver from his God-heard messages. He can never be wrong!

Now. That's mental illness.

4. Nah.
I believe there is a Higher Power. As long as my belief doesn't cause me to hurt myself or others (and it doesn't) I believe I should be left alone to believe in it as much as I want!

Hey some people believe their stuffed animals come to life and have parties when they leave the room, but you can never catch them at it!

(Ok, I believe that too.)

5. The diagnostic manual (DSM-IV) describes delusional behavior
in a way that fits religion perfectly and then qualifies the definition by saying it does NOT apply to religious beliefs. Hey, they have to eat too. A lot of delusional people have religious preoccupations and delusions however which are recognized as delusions; sort of back doors into what you're talking about.

How about this delusion: You hear voices, voices of God, voices of God telling you to take your son up to a mountain and sacrifice him; you take you son up to the mountain, prepare the sacrifice, and then hear God tell you, "Hey man, I was just fucking with you. Chill, relax, let the little guy go." Now that's delusional. Merry xmas.

7. no.
it is an attempt to fabricate a night light against the Big Sleep. Consciousness can be a frightening thing, but reactions to its profound realization are not always hysterical. I would not consider Thomas Aquinas one suffering from mental illness, and I would hope anyone who would read his Summa before speaking up.

you want my take on all this religion>>God stuff?

"In the beginning, God created the earth, and he looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness.

And God said, "Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done." And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. "What is the purpose of all this?" he asked politely.

"Everything must have a purpose?" asked God.

"Certainly," said man.

"Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this," said God.

And He went away."

8. No, it's no different than a child believing in Santa.
Except one day you realize Santa isn't real. "God" is a 24/7 Santa with constant advertising and great word of mouth, most people never realize it.
