Poll question: If I have two roommates, and they share a room.
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 12:59 AM by Kire
And I have my own room to myself...and there are only two private rooms.

Should I pay half the rent myself, or should we each pay in thirds?

Edit: they are a couple, and their room is slightly bigger than mine

1. Hmmm
are the two bedrooms equal size?

I'm inclined to say you pay half and the other two pay a quarter and a quarter, but you do share the REST of the apartment right?

When I was in school we did it that way. Anyone who got a bedroom to themselves paid more in rent. After all, you get total privacy for all that sex.

but not much

BTW, they are a couple, so unless someone's cheating, the sex is really not an issue

12. Oh well there goes that advantage
considering the fact that they are a couple and their room is somewhat bigger, I am now leaning in favor of each of you paying 1/3.

If they were just platonic roommates, it'd be a bit different.

19. I agree with this.
They get a bigger room, and they are going to use more utilities than you are. So, unless they are never there, and you are always there, thirds seems fair to me.

4. Sounds about right
idle curiousity strikes: Does that make the other two roommate roommates?

3. Thirds isn't really fair..
You have a better room than they do. I don't really think half is fair either, because there are probably other parts of your apartment that are shared equally. Maybe you could rotate rooms over a certain time period?

7. well, if the other two are sharing a room because they are
a couple, then no, you shouldn't pay more.

otherwise, i'd say you get more of the house to yourself, so you should pay a little bit more ... maybe not half, but more.

good luck :)

9. I'd say closer to 60-40-40 on rent, 1/3 on everything else
The place is more than the bedroom, I assume. You all share the living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Are you willing to pay twice as much as one of them? That seems pretty extreme, unless your folks are loaded and it's not your money you're spending.

10. HALF is the only fairest
You have your own bedroom and they have to share...AND they each have LESS privacy in all the common areas BECAUSE now they also have to share with you

13. Each should pay a third.
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 12:21 AM by norml
Different rental amounts for different room mates never works. However, you should provide some additional benefit to the household. This could be something like paying for something small, or being responsible for some cleaning task. If they are a couple, tell them to stop bitching, and to each pay their third of the rent. Don't let couples pull that "We should count as one room mate." crap on you. They share the room because they want to. It's their choice. It's their cost.

14. Thirds for sure since they are a couple
Would they be using two bedrooms if you weren't there? No, they would still share a room. You share a place and everyone should pay the same amount.

15. Thirds (each) or more than half (for the pair)....
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 12:22 AM by steely
How many baths / kitchens / living space.
Do they each use 25% of the utilities, or more?

If you kicked them out, and then shared with a new person, and then they said they are letting a 3rd friend stay with them (for free) - would you let that fly?

on edit: a little clearing up

one and a half baths

that is pretty much exactly what happened, here

daisy moved in under the auspices of needing space from Hugo, four days later, Hugo moved in and is staying ever since -- they came in through my mother, who is the landlord but doesn't live here, and the discrepancy was my mother's decision

16. I Would Suggest 40-30-30
to take into account their greater use of the common areas and your greater use of the sleeping areas.
