Sarah Michelle Gellar or Charisma Carpenter to be "Wonder Woman"
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/comments/?entryid=140541

RT-News writes: "Either Sarah Michelle Gellar ("The Grudge") and Charisma Carpenter ("What Boys Like") may be going from slaying vampires to flinging a lasso. According to Teenhollywood.com, the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" costars are in competition for the role of Wonder Woman after their former boss, Joss Whedon, took the directorial reins for the screen adaptation of the popular 1970s TV show.

One insider told the site that while Gellar is Whedon's first choice, the film's producers may be leaning toward Carpenter because she is less well-known."

8. I really don't think it would be that hard for her to play another super-
heroine.

If she'd done it RIGHT after Buffy everybody including her would probably scream typecasting but she's proved to be a viable movie-star outside of hand-to-hand combat roles.

Also you'd have her going to her natural hair color brown and that would help people distinguish

6. strange choices...
I love Joss Whedon. I have faith in what he does. His new work in comic books is extra-ordinary! And the whole Buffy thing was a definite work of art...I had not heard he was going to do Wonder Woman...I hoped he was going to take up the reins of the next X-Men flick...sounds like odd choices, but, if anyone can pull it off it's Joss...I was kinda thinking Catherine Zeta-Jones Douglas...but that's just me...:9

13. Joss Whedon Rocks
I have little or no interest in costumed superheroes, but Whedon at the helm means that this adaptation will have something of quality to offer. I understand he's also directing X3.

Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 06:22 AM by Bombtrack
kinda old to get started on something like this (a franchise) when you should be looking at it as being in the same universe as Brandon Routh or Tom Welling's Superman (whichever) and Christian Bales Batman.

She would have made a great Wonder Woman 10 years ago, but she sort of hit the wall IMO. Sure she went from a high 9 to a low 8 but you know, this is a comic book movie. It's not so superficial when you're trying to be faithful to drawings that never portray these characters as being anything but eternally youthful 9's to 10's.

But what the hell do I know I have no love for DC.

Sarah Michelle Gellar could work though. I mean, there's noone you cand depend more on in that age category for martial arts type scenes. What are WW's powers besides having deflecting arm bands and a whip? She knows martial arts right?

Can fly and has super strength...she does not have a whip...it is a magic lasso...and though I love sarah...I still think you need someone much taller to play an Amazon...I guess it depends on how you tell (retell) the story!
I know this is a huge picture...but right now I have no way of making it smaller..

10. well if they use that pic as a template, Charisma has the breast-implant
look down. Why the hell do some comic artists draw like that? Otherwise the drawing is perfectly gorgeous. But yeah Mr. Whedon definetly needs to expand his pool of options. Neither of them really fit.

14. You are correct on Carpenter & Gellar is a Republican
Charisma will be a bit old for a potential franchise and she "hit the wall" towards the end of Angel. I used to love her when she was on Buffy, though.

I lost respect for Gellar when I found out she was a Republican... too bad, Buffy was one of my all-time favorite shows.

Michelle Trachtenberg is turning into a young babe, though.

32. Um, you shouldn't just believe these pathetic right-wing sites that claim
celebrities to be republicans, when their basis for those claims are OVERWHELMINGLY empty. They'll call a person a republican or conservative because they performed for the troops in Iraq, and they aren't outspoken liberals. They'll also do it if they agree with one conservative issue or appear to, whether cultural, economic, or political. Or they'll call them that if they simply accept an invitation to something that President Bush is involved in. Like his innauguration or some whitehouse event or the SOTU. Even if they've never made a public political comment in their life.

As far as I know they base the belief that she's a "republican" on the fact that she made one statement that was pro-gun and that she's married to some tool actor who said he was a republican when he was with Bill O'Reilly on the tonight show.

28. No, he/she is completely correct.
That's the way Hollywood is, the whole place is ageist.

But that's true. IF she was spectacular or outstanding in some way, her age wouldn't be a factor. BUT, they should be able to find a better WW match with someone who is younger and will be able to commit to two or three films.

If age isn't a factor, I'd rather see some actresses with real talent pick it up--Sandra Bullock was attached to WW for ages, and I'd rather see her than either of these Buffy "actresses".

35. Well, do you think that might be your fault?
Blaming hollywood for ageism and then attacking someone's age is idiocy. It's what leads to the problem in the first place

Carpenter is a fine actress and she has worked with Joss Whedon before. She probably wont get the role though, as these things rarely work out.

Hollywood, you know?

38. No, it's not my fault.
Again, it's how things work in Hollywood. Historically, for franchises they don't seek out older actresses (and 34 is older in Hollywood).

Is that the only reason Charisma should be counted out? I don't think so...but there are obviously differences of opinion in whether she's a "fine" actress or not. Actually, I think acting ability is way toward the bottom of requirements in regards to the role.

40. Hollywood doesn't operate that way to be mean, they do it because of $$$$$
And pretending the world is flat doesn't make it so even if you'd really think it would be nice if it was.

42. thats logical
by all means lets not try to fight the treatment of homosexuals in society because the "earth is flat."

Ageism? Homosexuality? Why even bother? Thats just the way things are, right?

Im well aware that Hollywood is only interested in money but if a simple (I dont mean that in an insulting way) poster living in "middle america" says that, where do you think they get the idea from?

16. My picks for the role
OK, here are my choices to play Wonder Woman.

Eliza Dushku (another Buffy connection, dark haired & dark eyed and a Democrat)
Jennifer Garner – has the athleticism to play the part
Jessica Alba – the Dark Angel is one of my favorites. Beautiful & athletic.
Katherine Heigl – I think she has the height & is certainly attractive. I do not know her acting ability enough to know if she can pull off the intensity of Dushku or Garner.

Another I would consider, but maybe 'too nice' – Kristin Kreuk,

And, if you want to pay homage to the Lynda Carter WW, Catherine Bell would be good.

36. I don't think any of those would work
Eliza is probably the most likely of those but she's not tall enough

Jennifer Garner is already Elektra, which is the closest thing in the marvel universe to thier version of Wonder Woman. Greek mythology involved and everything. That would be like having Hugh Jackman play Lobo (DC's Wolverine ripoff).

Jessica Alba - I doubt they'd try having the Invisible Girl's actress play their most famous female character after having Storm's actress play their second most famous character went so horribly with Catwoman.

Katherine Heigl - Not as unworkable but she might not look right either in the costume or w/ black hair. Could work though.

I read a rumor that Mandy Moore was in consideration and I could really see that if they script a younger, origin-story type, character. Also in that age group Jessica Biel.

If it's older, more 30-ish that they're going for then Eva Mendes or Jolene Blalock I think would be the wisest.

actress...

and that's the BEST they can do?????

:grr:

I've been waiting for this movie ever since the first Batman movie came out, and they're going to cast BUFFY girls??

:grr:

WhatEVER. Plus, when building a franchise that you will probably have one or two sequels, you don't hire someone who's 33 years old--and looks it. That's a minor point, but I find it very hard to believe that's the best they could do. Who's producing this? Tweedledee and Tweedledum?

27. I, for one, think Charisma Carpenter is perfect for this role
She's one of the very few who have the personality and physical prerequisites to pull it off, a la Lynda Carter. I've been hoping for Charisma to be a candidate since they first talked about this project.

Last time I checked, 34 was not very old, particularly when someone looks like they're in their 20s. And Wonder Woman is supposed to be a WOMAN, not some Hillary-Duffish teeny bopper.

The rumor is that the producers want a relatively unknown actress for this part, which is why Gellar is not a serious contender.

I always thought she was the tough-chick type. Although it would be taking a chance on someone who's only had a couple small roles, Kim Smith is like a new improved version of Liv Tyler. Way better body, and without the baby voice, plus she said she's a huge fan of her and always wanted to play her.

43. some names from AICN - they say 'no' to Gellar
Aint it cool news is usually pretty good for rumors.

TV Guide¡¯s Mike Ausiello appears to confirm Monday the rumor we reported last Tuesday regarding Joss Whedon being close to a deal to write and direct a ¡°Wonder Woman¡± feature for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

(Hey, I just remembered something. On a visit to the fabulous ¡°Serenity¡± set last summer, Ain¡¯t It Cool asked Whedon what his favorite movie was, and the Buffiverse mastermind said it was probably Warner Bros. and Joel Silver¡¯s ¡°The Matrix.¡± Hey now.)

¡°Meanwhile, there's no word on who Whedon may tap to fill Lynda Carter's satin tights,¡± continues Ausiello, ¡°but I'm going to go out on a limb and throw Sarah Michelle Gellar's name into the mix.¡±

Mike, if you¡¯re reading this (and something tells me you might be), I¡¯ll bet you $200 Gellar¡¯s dainty toes do not find their way into Princess Diana¡¯s big-screen boots. I could be wrong, but I think fans might be skittish if the actress playing the famed Amazon warrior weighed less than 99 pounds.
