Great turnout for Young Dems meeting |
|
We had 14 kids show for our first/organizational meeting at my high school. They elected officers and put together an issues list to get educated about. This was all their doing -- I told them I'm just the faculty advisor/facilitator. It was so great to see so many kids eager to discuss issues and candidates. A couple of them had just registered to vote and said they were so excited about this.
What got me was their campaign speeches "I was born and raised a democrat." "My parents are liberal democrats and so am I." "I'm a democrat because I hate Bush and we need a change." "I'm a libertarian, but want to support a democrat to get the republicans out of office."
These kids are our future.... I'm so proud of them!

The nature of college means that you have good years and bad years at any given chapter. People are always coming and going. Graduating, transferring, losing interest, whatever.
Last year, our chapter had to use smoke and mirrors to stay chartered as both a chapter of CDA and an official student organization on campus - there were three active members at the end of the school year. The meetings for our entire spring semester consisted of nothing more than myself and the chapter President (and I was the Secretary responsible for taking 'minutes' at such lonely meetings.) It was awful.
This year, there were over a dozen people at our first meeting and nearly as many at our second meeting. We haven't even done anything yet and I'm really excited about this year.
You just have to try your best to stick through the bad years, because when the good ones come along - and they will come along - that makes all of the bad years worth it.

I couldn't keep a YD chapter going in Olympia (yes, liberal as Hell fucking OLYMPIA) during the mid 90's. We even had the meetings at Evergreen for God's sake. Rarely had more than 5 people show up and that was on a good day.
I guess now that the country is in deep shit, young people are waking up. Let's hope they never forget it.

That is grim. Maybe the presidential election activity is bringing them out. Mine said they were angry when the young repubs met and wanted their own club.
I hope we stay strong.... It's such a great group of kids!
