Sad but good story
By Sandra Thomas-Staff writer

They say it takes a village to raise a child.

At Jericho Beach, it took almost as many to save, then bury a duck.

It all started when a white Peking duck moved into a pond at Jericho Park about five years ago and became a familiar sight to the walkers, joggers, children and nature lovers who frequent the area.

"When the ponds are frozen over, we go out and feed the ducks," says longtime Jericho resident Kaethe Lange, who walks dogs for disabled people. "And this little white one was a favourite."

Last Monday, Lange went to the duck pond as usual, but found that the duck-known as Herbie, Donald Duck or Peter depending on who you ask-was obviously injured. She managed to catch him and took him to a veterinarian, who told her that despite losing more than a third of his feathers and suffering wing and leg injuries-most likely from a dog attack-he'd live if she could find him a safe home.

If his name wasn't Herbie, I doubt it would have been as sad...

2. Quack, I raised a clutch of Mallards once and they too went thru the doggy
attack thing. One by one, dogs got at the ducks, the last one lasted 3 years before it too met the jaws of the dogs.

Sad, but its nature.

To see the ducklings grow, play, swim, dive, etc is one of the best ways to appreciate nature.

But, shit happens.
