10 Super Foods you should eat... and 10 foods to avoid.
Eat healthy, Democrats! We must be healthy and strong in order to fight the right. Before you forward this to any Republicans, reverse the lists so that they will eat the bad stuff.

11. Movie popcorn is evil
If drowned in butter substitute the way they do.

Leave out the butter substitute, and it's fine.

But as far as I'm concerned, movie popcorn is gross and nasty to begin with. I feel safer popping my own and bringing it with me.

5. Add avocados to you superfood list
I love milk, but I'm surprised it's on the list.. Everything I've read says cow's milk is horrible for you. The hormone thing. I think frozen pizza (and most other frozen foods) should be on the bad food list as well.

71. milk
dairy is iffy in terms of health-value.

Soy milk is good, but has very little calcium. So, you can just avoid dairy and take calcium pills (or get calcium from green leafy vegetables such as spinach)

They (tabloids? I don't remember), say that hormones in milk are partially responsible for early menstrual onset in girls......eeeek!

Pepperoni -- fat and grisle dyed red
Bacon -- fat and salt and nitrites
Frito Lay Bean dip -- lard, salt

to which I would add:
The Schlotsky's Deli Beef Reuben
33 grams of fat and 3,955 mg of sodium

and the Schlotsky's Deli "Large Original Sandwich"
58 grams of fat and 4,592 mg sodium and 1390 calories

12. I would add tomatoes to the list, as more and more good stuff
is being discovered about their innate goodness.

I don't think this is a banning type of list, more like good advice from a nutrition source.

My favorite cold cereal is shredded wheat with bananas, but mostly I eat oatmeal, with a tsp of olive oil and a little brown sugar in it.

OH yeah another good for you food is cinnamon. It helps diabetics control their glucose, and appears to also help in LDL reduction.

I notice eggs are not on either list.

sorry to see the McGriddle, I suffered a massive addition to those this summer. LOL, my favorite thing at McD is breakfast anyway.

Heck, I knew the thing was toxic when I ate it the first time, it was a no brainer.

19. Kale is delicious!
Though few people seem to eat it these days -- probably because they were served overcooked Kale with the consistency of slop. Kale greens can be served lightly boiled, steamed or even stir-fried (with pecans). For a big pot of kale greens I recommend a dash of crushed hot peppers, diced onion, some garlic if you prefer, and a good portion of low-fat margarine. Goya makes a passable artificial ham flavoring if you like a touch of meat taste with your greens. There are few foods more nutricious than kale, and kids should be introduced to such foods so they can cultivate a taste for them throughout their lives. Serve the Kale with hot cornbread, small whole potatoes with fresh parsley, some baked chicken and you have one great meal. Yum -- hillbilly food!

...along with a cup of tea with honey. I like grating fresh cinnamon and nutmeg into that oatmeal, too. Cinnamon is Very Good for you.

Pepperoni Pizza and Coke later in the day. :) (Real pizza...not that frozen crap, not from Domino's or Pizza Hut either.)

Somewhere in there I'd actually be cooking real food...using fresh or frozen veggies...no canned, ever. I like dicing and slicing fresh food. It's a compulsion, what can I say?

I wouldn't eat a frozen pot pie or anything with a list of ingredients I can't identify, anymore than I'd eat tofu in any form.

Eat real food. Accept no substitutes.

38. you guys keep saying things like tomatos
and other good stuff and I guess you haven't read up on monsanto. You can thank the last 4 years bush cabinet for them not labeling how many genetically altered fruits and vegetables you are buying now. Some catagories have 70 percent. Many at least 30 percent.

I prefer to eat very healthy and won't be doing the alfredo crap.

My problem is with frankenfoods there isn't much healthy anymore. I'm a vegetarian and I don't want fish dna spliced in with my rice. Stanford University has released data on the genetically altered foods not being more healthy than natural, not producing more crop - in many cases far less, and taking far more pesticides to maintain the smaller crops they are getting.

There isn't an advantage that they could find for genetically altered food. They cite where it didnt' live up to what the companies said it would be.

That's what we're talking about here right? You guys mean STORE bought produce - at least most of you.

Perhaps you should really open your eyes to whose who in the Bush administration, because monsantos where many of them came from, and still support.

I received one of those Jenny Craig free offers for 2 weeks. I learned things I've forgotten. To lose weight, you must eat the amount of calories proportioned to your body mass and height. I was placed on 1200 calories a day to lose 2 pounds a week. Two pounds a week is what any human body will lose safely. Anything more than 2 pounds, it's only water and it's gained right back.

I thought 1200, I would starve. Jenny Craig is only about smaller portions and satisfying your body's nutritional need. When I started my nutritional diet, I did not exercise. Exercise makes me hungry. After losing 25 pounds, now I do my power walk, 20 minutes daily. I have learned how to eat smaller portions and don't need the Jenny Craig foods.

I eat my breakfast, 300 calories. Snack 50 to 100 calories. Lunch, 300 calories, another snack 50 calories and dinner, 300 to 400 calories. You must read all package calorie content until you get it in your head; I am allergic to eating more than 1200 calories daily.
I can't do Atkins because meat contains too much hormones, and my body (female) already makes hormones that help me get fatter. A low carb diet is good for me. I eat more vegetables, salads, fruits, grains and natural products.

44. produce
I've been following the genetically altered food debate for years now. This link is good because it brings a lot of the info together - even the politics.

47. Great link
very informative. one of the important issues generally overlooked, is the effect GE foods eaten by children and teenagers could have on their children and on future generations. That has obviously not been tested.

isn't 3000 calories almost a pound of body fat?
How about a bloomin onion + a thick pat of butter, and wash it down with a tall glass of egg nog ........3500 calories

52. Just be careful with cantaloupe...
The rind has been shown to carry and transmit the deadly hepatitis and salmonella viruses. If the rind has not been cleaned thoroughly, when cut, the knife carries the virus into the meat, contaminating it. Apparently, in the fields, the cantaloupe pickers do not have the best access to bathroom facilities and they just "go" in the fields. When you prepare cantaloupe, use a vegetable brush to scrub the skin thoroughly with HOT water and soap before you slice into it.

75. Sometimes they are
Yes, like I said, the problem often stems from the fruit pickers defecating in the fields.

54. I'd add strawberries to the list too.
It's a good thing I eat good old fashioned oatmeal for breakfast almost daily! And that I love berries, oranges, spinach, broccoli, and green beans. Sorry...won't catch me eating a sweet potato, though!

On the "never" eat foods - I try not to say "never" about anything (except maybe the aforementioned sweet potatoes. :D). While I agree these are foods that should not be consumed regularly, an occasional treat of fettucine alfredo, a cookie, or a good root beer from time to time is not going to kill someone.

61. Is it actually bad to eat high calorie foods?
If you are normal weight or lighter, have good vitals, and don't have any cardiovascular problems and eat enough goods foods too?
I just wondered. They always act like high calorie means unhealthy but not everyone needs to lose weight nor has health problems affected by fat and cholesteral intake. Is high calorie unhealthy for other reasons?

66. No, not in small quantities. It's the total calorie intake that matters in
weight maintenance. A small serving of a calorie-dense food such as cheesecake is not going to make that much difference in the grand scale of things. If you consume more calories in a day than you burn in that day, you gain weight. If you burn more calories in a day than you consume, you lose weight that day. It's the total calorie intake that matters in weight maintenance, not a one-time serving of a high-calorie food.
