My grandfater was buried today.. and I could not be there.... |
|
Due to conflicts regarding my final exam schedule, coupled with financail and transportation difficulties, I could not attend my grandfather's funeral.
I feel so depressed and guilty now, even though my mother assured me that it was okay with the rest of my family and that they understood.
I still feel really sad, I almost feel like crying now.

He would understand. Completely. I am sure that he was very proud of the fact of your attending college.
Old folks have a way of understanding what is important. Truly important.

4. Jonathan, I wasn't at my grandfather's funeral (this was back in 1989), |
|
and I felt guilty, too. It was in CT (I'm in VA). My parents understood. They said to me what counts is how you treated the person while he/she is living. I hope that gives you some comfort. I don't mean to sound callous, but I do know what you mean.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure your grandfather would understand as well. He, I'm sure, is very proud of you for all you've accomplished. :)

I still remember when my grandmother died. I was working far away and couldn't spend her last days with her. Know that your grandfather knows the love you have for him, and that your family loves you and knows how you feel.

I couldn't make it to any of my grandparents' funerals ... but I have to believe they know I love them even if I couldn't be there in person to honor them.

Go ahead and cry, it is OK and if you feel like it then it is the best thing to do. I am certain your Grandfather would understand, certain. If the tables were turned wouldn't you? You had him in your thoughts today I am sure and you know that is much more important. I am so sorry. It is OK to feel sad but you needn't feel guilty.

I was unable to attend my Grandmother's funeral. She wouldn't have minded. It was my mother who tortured me with guilt. She was concerned with how my absense looked to others. Have I told you that she's a Repuke.

12. I Missed My Grandfather's Funeral Too |
|
... so I know a little bit of what you're feeling. Whenever there's a family crisis, we all do what we are capable of doing. Your inability to attend is not a measure of your love for your grandfather, nor is it a a reflection on your responsibility to your family and wanting to be there to show your support and offer comfort.
My condolences for your loss. I'm sure it's been a difficult week for everyone.

13. Why not have a ceremony where you are - with a friend? |
|
A mini-one in which you speak of your fondest memory and light a candle - or say a prayer - or have a moment of silence and honor?
Those sort of things help me out.
I'm sorry for your loss. I'll say a prayer! We'll celebrate his life on DU! Blessings and comfort to you!
