Who saw the new show Coupling? |
|
I watched the British version on late night PBS station here in DC WETA.
It is a lot better. The timing was off in the American version. Everything moved like they were on speed.
I use to think that American versions of British shows have problems when they do NOT stick to the original spirit of the Brit show.
Who's Line is it Anyway? IMO is almost just as good because it keeps to the spirit of the show.
That is not enough. Coupling shows that you can just blantantly copy a Brit show line for line. You have to keep to the spirit of the show but make it your own.
I understand that now. I hope that WETA plays the second season of the Brit Version of Coupling.
Honestly, if you can find them, the originals are incredibly funny smart and sexual. A tough and extremely funny combo. The American version is hollow in comparison.

1. the original IS so much better ! |
|
... same with British Men Behaving Badly ... THAT show was a riot !
Then the stateside networks tried to turn it into 'Men Behaving Badly' or some similar rot and ruined it.
I enjoy the shows in BBC and BBCA so much more than what we 'create' ... :eyes:

Standard cable is actually covered in basic fees for our community. Yeah, it is odd but part of the deal to get cable to in this new community quick. We just moved off the bunny ears getting my wife to budge on anything else is not happening. She is no HBO is filth prude but she just does not see the reason to pay the extra money for two or so stations we want one is obviously BBC America (especially since she is a Brit).

4. The British version is SO much better |

...their delivery is so much more subtle. the Americans seemed to push every line as if it were the best line ever delivered.
It felt so....claustrophobic.
BBCAmerica ran the same episode (British version) immediately following NBC's. It was easily a superior version.
Of course, I'll be watching again next week. I will maintain hope that with time, they will get better.
And Rena Sofer...she will NEVER be as lovely and talented as my delicious Sarah Alexander.

5. Oh, and incidentally.... |
|
...they did change several things from the British version tonight.
jane didn't discuss the Titanic in the British version. She instead mentioned a man who murdered his wife. the name was foreign to me (pun intended).
Also, they removed the best line from the show...when Susan was preparing to flash a breast, Jeff stopped her saying "No, that's the left. We want the good one." Tragic that they cut that.

he was a famous british murderer who killed his misses, i dont think the british humour in coupling carries over well without the welshness of geoff. I think its a cultural thing, some times the humour works, most times it dosent. ill stick with bbc america. remember the meltiman.
