I was just the victim of a very cruel joke

An aquaintance from college comes on IM. Then his girlfirend claims to be using his handle and that he has been thrown in jail. She then says her boyfriend got a DUI and is in jail. She claims that he attacked a police officer at a concert a few days ago. She all but threatens to kill herself and she puts herself down. She blames herself. She also hits on me and says that she is flying to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and I have to tell her not to come.

I go through this back and forth for two hours almost and then at the end he comes back and says that it was a joke and that he wasn't in jail.

I am really angry right now. I am beside myself. Joking about DUIs and imprisonment is not a laughing matter.

the same thing happened to me in the flesh. I went to pick up a friend from the gas station where he worked. The owner told me that my friend had been arrested drunk and flashing passing cars. He said they bail was probably 500 bucks and that I could pick him up downtown at the police station.

I sped home and pleaded with my dad for the money, got it after a long argument, then went to the police station to bail out my friend. They almost locked me up because they thought I was nuts.

turns out he was in the gas station bathroom when I showed up.

Yeah, it was reaaaaaalllly funny.

I've noticed that people who like malicious, manipulative tricks at others' expense frequently get upset when things don't go the way they had planned ... I wonder how he would have reacted if you had been receptive to the "advances"?

So he's just figured out another way of bullying people, besides using his bulk.

It's a safe prediction that one of these days he's going to be in real need himself, and wondering why people don't feel like helping him. You gave him the benefit of the doubt, and he abused it. I'm reminded of what our late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau once said, after finding out that Richard Nixon had badmouthed him -- "I've been called worse things by better people." All that guy proved with that little stunt was what a loser he is.

p.s. you know this already ... you're a sensible person ... what DemoTex and the others pointed out -- somebody like that is going to keep messing around with you every chance he gets. Whether he is mentally ill or just very unpleasant, it seems there is a lot of stuff going on with him. Chances are he's tried this with other people, and it will all blow up in his face someday ... get far away from him, so you are nowhere in the vicinity when it happens!

Probably he'll whine "it was just a joke" -- well, nothing "just" about that kind of humor.
