1. I spent a week there in 1993.
As far as 3rd world countries go, its not bad. Seriously, a lot of Germans and other Europeans go there for vacation, so they are used to westerners and have some decent hotels and amenities, at least in Tunis. The main languages are Arabic and French (its a former French colony), so learn some of either and you'll get by. Traffic is insane, don't try to drive on your own.

And don't miss the ruins of Carthage north of Tunis.

3. She tells me that a lot of Italians/sicilians live there too.
Her village near Tunis, I cant remember the name, has an Italian name. She used to work for the national tourism commission and is trying to get me to move there. Her father is a longtime employee of the US Embassy (interpetor).

5. There was a student at the last college where I taught
who had been an AFS student there. I met her because living in Tunisia was what got her interested in French (which she started picking up, as well as conversational Arabic).

I think it's one of the more liberal North African countries for women's rights.

6. Thats what she tells me. It not an Islamic Theocracy like Saudi Arabia is.
Women can compete with men for jobs and they are not forced to wear burquas.
She tells me that the beaches are the best on the Mediterranean.
