It's 10-digit dialing here Maryland... it's a pain. But... it's easier than shouting, and faster than mail.

10. Not too many people - TOO MANY PHONES!!
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 08:18 AM by LynneSin
I have 3 numbers - work, home and cell plus there is another line for our group that you could reach me through.

I know people who have more than that - work, home, home cell, home fax, work cell, work fax, pager for work, pager for home, 2nd and 3rd line for kids who are on the phone too often and I haven't even considered the kids who have their own cell phone and pagers.

I remember when there was one phone to reach my entire family at home and one line for our entire group at work.

3. A Buddy Of Mine Pays EXTRA $$$ For A Vanity Number That Spells...
"CALL STAN" (actually "CALL STA" since the "N" is superfluous)

I suppose it's a convenient and cool gimmick if you're single---which he is---and if you're constantly giving out your phone number to other guys---which he does.

5. Mine used to be street address.
When we moved here I asked if I had any choice for a phone #.
"Somewhat."
I was able to get the same last 4 numbers as our street address. Cool. Fewer "new" numbers to memorize.
The they changed the area code AND the exchange # and I lost it all.
:-(

4. Ours
All calls within our area code are 7 digit (local and toll calls), and outside the area code are 10-digit.

7. Houston is 10-digit
Lots of people complained about it.

One old guy wrote in to the Chronicle. He explained that phone numbers were 4-digits long when he was young. They changed & he adjusted. The changed again & he adjusted. Now another change was coming & he wanted all these baby-boomers & generation x-ers to stop whining & get with the program!

8. my solution
Everyone should be given a 10 digit phone number. It would apply across the board. The prefix number would indicate where you're calling. So 1-xx-xxx-xxxx would be home, 2- would be cell, 3- would be work, 4- would be line 2 at home, etc.

If anyone needs more than 10 phone lines, they're entirely too popular.

This way, you only have to have that one ten digit number. Simple, eh? As digital switching spreads (it's just about everywhere now, right?) there shouldn't be any real difficulty.

That reminds me, Bill Gates has predicted the death of long distance, since digital switching makes a call across the country cost no more than across the street.

9. I'm 7 digits, but I moved here from a 10 digit area
Philly was one of the first areas to go 10 digits, so I got use to giving out the area code all the time. Now I live in Delaware which is a 7 digit state and people look at me funny because I'm always giving them all 10 digits and they really only want the 7.
