My Morning, So Far
Middle of the night:

wake up, notice my alarm clocks (I get up at 4:30, so keep two - one bedside, one across the room to drag my ass awake) are dead. Power outage. Grab the stand-by wind-up alarm clock and head to the dark living room to get the proper time (2:30 am) and set it. Head back to bed. Stumble on the way, drop the clock, breaking it.

Sometime later: drift back to sleep. Power comes back on at 5, conveniently waking me up with enough time if I shower immediately at get moving.

5:35: discover the rain that turned to snow overnight has left my car door locks frozen. Try heating the key with cigarette lighter. No help.

5:45 Doh! Realize I can maybe get in if I strip off the plastic sheeting from a rear corner window, where the car was broken into over a year ago but I was too lazy to get fixed, and get the back door open. Door won't budge.

5:50: Try again. Eureka! Car is started. Now, I have to get back out and brush snow & ice off windshield & back window. Front doors still won't unlock, so I have to crawl over the backseat again to get out and back in. Brush. Getting back in, I bump my head on the dome light, and am unable to figure out how to get it to switch back off.

6:00: finally, am on the road. Slick, icy road. Driving up a hill, I notice a slipped-out car who thinks it's a good idea to back into the road perpendicular-style, to straight himself and get going again.

I scream, but manage to avoid him.

6:20: I silently wish the 18-wheeler that's less than 10 feet off of my bumper a safe trip and that his loved ones get to see Santa walk through the door. Semi-sincerely, even.

6:35: get to work over 1/2 hour late.

Hooray for Yoga.

1. Two words: HOT WATER
When your doors are frozen shut, pour just enough hot water over the doors to melt the ice (the water will freeze again, so don't use too much). Then, while your car warms up, open the other doors from inside.

6. Hopefully, the rest of your day will be better than your morning.
Be careful driving, even here in Chicago when we get ice; which doesn't happen all that often, everyone forgets how to drive.

Take care and stay warm.

11. It's Crazy Here
Nashville. We get 1/2 an inch and it automatically turns to ice.

7. You were only half an hour late?
I'd've said "fuck it" as soon as I found the door locks frozen. But then, I'm a native southern Californian. I'm afraid to drive if I drop an ice cube in the kitchen.

I'm also the product of a Catholic schooling, which means you don't play hookey unless you're on your deathbed.

12. LOL!
I know about that "on your deathbed" stuff.

I always figured it along the lines of first, Am I going to make enough money today to make it worth-while risking limb and sheet metal to try to go to work, and secondly, if it's really that nasty out, am I going to have any customers come in anyway?
